Hahahahahahahahaha another thread, another topic, another discussions, yet another arguments.First of all be the changed tht u wanna see in the world.Everyone knows that caste systems exist in Nepal aswell as most every country. The best solution is making people educate.Once people r educate they knows tht humanity is more superior then all those boundries we got between continent, between countries, between political parties, between places between religion and between caste.
Though it takes time but gradually it's changing the attitude of people these days.

Neithere education nor the law can change the cast system from it's base.
Because educated people are also strict on the discrimination among the casts.
The Muluki Ain already dismissed cast in Nepal in Chandra Samsher period.

To the some extent, following postulates may minimize the discrimination:

1. To make free to put/change his/her Sirname himself/herself. You may write
JPT(Je payo tyahi) like Sukumbashi, Dhaniram, Badal, Mriga, Computer, PDA, Mobile, DNA, Sahu Jee, Winner, Raja, Maharaja, Mantri Jee, Hero, Sundari, Miss Nepal, Bin Ladin, Prachanda, Diamond, Palace anything. Then it will gradually be diverted towards modern system. The young generation will forget it.

2. Promoting original cultures of all the races. If you like a good culture of a race you will obviously respect that race without depending on the old cast system.

Generally speaking, your last name displays your caste. Mangolia tried to refrom their clan/caste system by eliminating their family name. Problem solved for a short period, but as population rose and urbanization took place, this wasn't feasible anymore, it created a lot of confusion. Finally, they made it mandatory for everyone to register the full name. There might be a different approach to this. But i don't believe this is something that will be eliminated overnight in Nepal. Education is the only way to get rid of this, once people are educated and enter into the professional world, who cares if your professor is 'Damai' caste, your doctor is' Kami' caste, your driver is 'bahun' and so on. Acceptance of intercaste marriage in the society is a positive sign of heading towards this direction.

Thanks for your inputs guys! U guys have mighty points....In my view, I think to some extent education is the key to lock that ignorance.....it helps to change the society quite a bit. At the same time "bhinazu" brought out a disparate idea. It's very interesting. I have seen people putting their last name in a title like "kavi", "sapana" etc.... just random words that people like. But it might take some time to apply too.

It might take a long time to change this system in our society but I can see our young generation have a different perspective on this than the previous generation. But some of the educated people who have so called " high caste", they don't want to change the system because they are considered powerful, intelligent until they have their last name. As a result we young people suffer quite a bit..... not only we can't marry with our choice of person but our choices are limited to within our caste (and even in a one caste let's say newar.. there are several levels too.....which is ridiculous in this century. We get one life to live and we can't even choose our life partner phew! The discrimination of the so called "low caste" people is intolerable....everywhere like work, society, social gatherings etc. Lower caste people are getting poorer and poorer whereas upper caste people are richer and richer. Hopefully next generation people will be more educated and smarter....but we have start that process from now.....let's brainstrom some ideas...

I have an idea, Sweetipie, why don't you take a lead role in preparing a Documentary foucussing on Caste system and Women's position in Nepali Society. Figure out how much budget is needed, we'll do a fundraising, have nepali government put in some $$, get some from NGO's like ex-peace corp vols. like Palpali Gaule, get a local TV network to air in Nepal. Its a lot of work, but i won't be surprised for someone like you so full of energy to think about it.

I am against all the systems in the world that differenciates us and make someone high which it degrades others. I am not only againt case system but i have also against class system, color sysmtem, education system(that differenciates us: like some cocky ppl vs. people who are less fortunate people to receive good education) , religious sytem ( hindu, muslim, seikh, christain etc etc) and more systems.
So it's not case, it' snot class or color; it's the system. Why "system" because we humans love to differenciate ourselves, like to think we are better than the rest. So there, the disease is inside our head, caste system is only a symptom...
how to cure this disease? I think we humans need to be less selfish. .. we should base our system that praise unselfish people who do good things to others.. and the caste system which is one of the symptoms of the disease will be cured when the disease is cured itself....

You know there is always going to "Me Vs. You" system in this world. For eg. lets look at different scale-

Bahun Vs. Sharki (both Nepali)
Nepal Vs. India (both Hindus)
India Vs. Pakistan (both Asian countries but different dominant religioin)
South Asian Vs. Asian ( same continent)
Asian Vs. Blacks/Whites/Latinos (inter-Racial)
Men Vs. Women (within races)

We have these dicriminations at different levels in this world. Efforts to eradicate these needs to be both at grassroot level and higher levels. Its gonna take a long time, by this time we might have discovered "Alien" life in other planets and new discrimination begins

" Human Vs. Aliens"

Excellent points dyamn, and u too bedrock. It seems like u are mocking me for a sec for being so active! If u are, then it's sad! Are u disappointed that I am trying to help women in Nepal? Why are u bringing that women topic here? Then remain sad and mock people....who cares? Well it's not that easy to do all these thing is it? If it was that easy I would have finished it 10 times dear! I can't promise to do all these in my lifetime and the fact of the matter is that I can't. Probably I can do something for women's and u with the caste system, how about that buddy? Let's share our task hmm??

Yes, it willl take generations to solve the equality issue but not that long until we find "Aliens" if we do something now...... like here, black people fought against the white and are able getting more and more powerful, it takes struggle. Sitting around won't take us anywhere. Yeah, it is tough but there must be some remedy for it. Especially in Nepal there's extreme caste system though. That u can't eat the food or water that the lower caste person has touched. what?? U can't marry another caste even though u are born and raised in the same town. And men vs. women is the most ridiculous one! women is nepal are the most unfortunate ones.... let's not even go there! If education is the key to this then think about how to activate that one instead of doing nothing to cure this disease!

If u r in US, aint u an alien. I am an alien myself but I am brown instead of green. I do not care about cast system but still wanna keep my last name so that it reminds me of my roots no matter where am I.

Sweetiepie:
Here is an excerpt from my article in The Kathmandu Post. This one was a reply to my friend Sapkota's article about discrimination in America. Here it goes........

"....But there are some differences between people - the difference between white and coloured people, and the difference between rich and poor people. This exists everywhere, even in our own doorsteps. Discrimination is more dominant in our own society than anywhere else in the world. Sapkota sent me an e-mail yesterday saying that discrimination in foreign soil has a different political meaning. That might be true. Yet, discrimination is discrimination after all, isn't it?It just happens that Sapkota, Sharma, and myself are all Brahmins. We can only imagine what it means to be an untouchable in our own society. To be born in an untouchable family (without any fault of one's own) and live one's whole life as a fourth-class citizen in one's own soil must be pretty tough. It must be heartbreaking to be told that a glass of pure water gets contaminated with one's single touch. I consider this the height of discrimination. At least, this doesn't happen in America or in any other caste-less societies......."

if we cure this disease, there will be other kind of disease in rising..that is what makes us human, because we love to discriminate. and categorize things or beings..

this might be a bad example , but just week weeks ago, here in sajha, they started writers' guild, just to differnciate themselves from normal sajhaties :P..again, this might be the bad example, but this is one example that pops on my head right now..

Caste system huh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a nepali is inferior to an american and neparican so whats so different about caste system then this attitude.bahun thulo kami sano american thulo nepali sano is the view and why talk big on caste system.
any way ma chai nepali bhako huna ley,i like caste system i am not bahun and a i am not a chettri by caste i am a kirat and i am proud. plus ,to be precise caste system was never bad it was the racism(castism???????) thats bad.its the supression of the so called bigger caste.caste system ,i beleive was done for good ,for specialization in the owrk field, but i have to say the bramhans of the early time made it go seriously bad .
caste system in nepal was a good thing with certain limitations but formulates in the wrong time.

Sweetipie "It seems like u are mocking me for a sec for being so active! If u are, then it's sad! "

I am not mocking you. I was serious about what i said. Since I don't live in nepal and don't even visit there often. I can't physically do anything. But I see that you can make a difference and was just suggesting about the Documentary thing. I am up for good cause and want to see and hear good things in Nepal.
