Hi guys, I have a query regarding the programming jobs available in the market. I am taking a java course through consultancy. How is the real job/work look like in the company? I mean how tough is it to work. You gotta be pro in programming or just basic knowledge is enough to start off. What are chances of getting fired? How much do they make a year? The reason i'm asking this is I make $60k/year. Is it gonna be higher or lower than my income?
Anyone want to share their experiences is highly appreciated.
Thank you

Xoom bro,
Java is a great field to go for right now. You will not regret it, once you become pro. However to get hang of it is quiet challenging. Not trying to scare you but it takes a good amount of effort for first couple of years to grasp the fundamentals. Java itself is huge and also you have to consider other technologies that you interface with like html, css, jquery in the front end and various database in back end. One of the senior Java developer in the company I work at said, 'after 15 years working as java developer, i'm finally understanding the core concepts". Meaning, there are new thing you can learn everyday, unlike some other jobs where you learn for few month and repeat the same for rest of your life.
To answer you question, you don't have to be pro to start off but you should know the core concept of programming. Its like solving math problems, the more you practice the more you learn. Also it depends on the company and manager. If its a small company with you as primary developer, you will be screwed. When I started off, I spent like 4-5 hours extra everyday at home to finish the task, even more in weekends. The point is, you should try to learn as much as you can for first couple years.
About the salary, you are eventually gonna make alot more after you have some years of experience. Starting range will be around 65-80k. People with 10 years experience makes around 200k easy.
Good luck !

200k easy might be little exaggeration . Lets remove 'easy' . That was based on people I have known over years. There are developers working with me with 10+ years making well more than 200k. Not to mistake with 100k.
If we go with statistics, In US, 8-10 yrs experienced developer makes in average 139k - 149k. Also depending on location and company salary varies a lot. For example if you work in SF , the average is much higher. And i'm talking about real experience and not attaching with any consultancy. Suppose you are getting paid 65k from a consultancy. That means the end client is actually paying about 85-100k for you. Consultancy takes out the rest for themselves. If you work directly for the client, all that money is yours.

Still exaggeration. ...
In US, 8-10 yrs experienced developer makes in average 139k - 149k.==> Valid only in Silicon valley or NYC.
But, hardly anyone stays as 'developer' for 10 yrs.

Seriously? You think people will work for a company for 90k after having >10 years experience. Not trying to brag about it but I was getting paid more than that while I had only <3 years of experience several years back( with real credentials).

And about your second point... that's true company will assign different title to developer to motivate you as promotion. They give you title like Senior Analyst, Software Engineer III, Senior Programmer analyst, Lead developer etc. but end of the day all are developers. Few will go for architect or Dev team manager but everyone cannot be manager. For most of the company I have worked at, we had roughly 50% developer with 8 or more years of experience.
What do you think all the developer do after they have more than 10 years experience?

I am also working in IT field for more than 3.5 years and have close friends who have almost 10 years of experience or more than that in my company. Also, I have more than 10 indian friends where most of them have around 10 years of experience and they make from 90-95K to 105-120K. Not only that, I have friends with JAVA experience of 10+ years and they are white and still makes around 100K. I know some places on Bay Area, SFO or NY makes around 140K-160K. But Saying easy or average of 200K is exaggerate. I live in California but not in Bay Area or SFO area.
Its my personal opinion and seeing other people and hearing from friends. No Objection to those who make 200K. Cheers to those who makes that much. :)

Sojoketo,
I can show you my paystub if you want to see. It is in Washington DC, Federal project.
Do you mean to say, Java developers can make 210K, not .NET developers?
