A small child is worshipped as a living goddess in Nepal. After certain period, she is replaced with another Kumari. The previous kumari will lost the privilege of being goddess and that privilege is given to new Kumaris according to the tradition. What happens to the future of that child is of less concern to those people who blindly follow this tradition. Once a goddess, will have to choose a life of seclusion, poverty, and many psychological illness. Along with it, many superstitions follow Kumari's life till their last breath. Can Nepal move forward without amending Kumari Pratha? Where is the child's right to play, learn, and live a normal life?

Sajhamitra, first of all the article was published by Nepali Times, which is not affiliated to any academic research institution. Second, the interview was taken by a westerner as a means of curiosity. The article lacks intensive research techniques. Therefore, I don't look such article as reliable source for authentic research. Kumari pratha shouldn't bee taken lightly. The foundation of this tradition is wrong. A girl is proclaimed as Goddess and later she becomes a common woman. This transition is not a normal transition for most women whose psychology works very differently than men. This tradition is nothing but a mental construction. It's a human institution that was created long ago which is not based on logic. An innocent girl is being used in the name of tradition for fulfilling people illogical bizarre ego-sense desire.

Giordano, this thread is not about liking and disliking at all! I hope you understand the freedom of speech. I opened this thread to have a intellectual discussion rather than emotion based liking and disliking. That is what Sajha is here for! If someone doesn't like Teej, let him speak up and lets hear what he has to say about Teej so that we can understand his perspective. Ideas makes our world; better the ideas, better the world will be.

Ujl,
What qualifies you to invalidate the Nepalitimes article? I don't think you are some research methodology expert either. त्यो article ले बाबु तिमीलाई मज्जाले लोप्पा ख्वायो तेसैले मन परेन, होइन?

You seem to be a sad sad being and have to come up with something silly to kill your lonesome, and that's ok. We are here to help you. But don't ridicule someone's way of life while you are a victim of little knowledge of the subject matter. Go spend some years (ok just weeks) with some of those kumari family , get a feel about them, and then bark here!

Fair deal?

People are reacting rather than discussing. Wise sages were right: where there is mind, there is stupidity.

Uji Where is my right to call you a [Disallowed String for - use not allowed] for not wearing a dhaka topi and daura surwal everyday ? You are not representing Nepal by wearing what you are wearing therefore are not qualified to be called a Nepali. Yesta waiyat haru lai ke bhanney. Kumari is a culture of Newari people. If you take that away pretty soon there will be no Newari people. Just like people would like to take Thanksgiving away because it degrades the Native Americans. But that is what defines America and American way of life !!!
Your Intellectual discussion sounds rather irrational and asinine.

You were discussing the sheer symantec of the Nepalitimes article. With that you were trying to use logic on how an article should be written, an arbitrary consensus of writing, or an agreement of minds.

Now tell me, who is stupid here.

Uji, So is cannibalism in Mauri Culture. Just because some culture's idealism does not fit your norm does not mean they are out-dated or primitive. Yes stoning someone is wrong, eating someone is wrong but you have to be very selective from a moralistic perspective not a cultural barrier.
