I understand exactly what it says.I don't see the purpose of it. Newars have been known to be that for generations. Don't get me wrong, I have some Newari in me too.Anyways have good one.

I do not think Newars are cowards.
But i know that Newari culture does not value  service and sacrifice as much as other culutures  do. And since business is at heart of their rich tradition, a career in defense or police force can be considered very risky with less reward. Historically Newari culture has failed to come together, instead they have split and fought amongst each other.
But these are all general remarks, individuals are different. Hence these should be something to reflect back as history.
The future for Nepali living together and prosperously is in our hand.  Let's make it a better place to live by joining hands.

CT bro.. ur research is good ... but I did not understand in what connection you are posting this... I have never heard anyone saying Newars as cowards.

If Newers were cowards, the Lichhavi and Malla dynasty would have never existed. History is written for winners.

I smell your bitter remorse on other caste in this post...

Enjoy Dashain... happy weekend!!!

I agree with you Mr. CT regarding the gist of your posting that its not worthwhile to look at a person's caste or any other irrelevant parameters to determine whether he/she is brave or coward and it vividly reflects a person's sick mentality if he/she wants to relate occupation with a person's caste/race. Joining Nepal army or being in other occupation, to a large extent, is a matter of available opportunity and A PERSON's need.

I tried to touch on the topic how a particular ethnic group is victimized in our history falsifying the facts. Newars have worked in every occupation like any other groups did in Nepal. But, the racist and ill-intended people have created several false rumours and funny phrases to undermine their contribution. There are records of intentional hiding of facts that our country benefited from the Newars. For example, it was Newari Lipi used to present in the UN as the script of Nepal; it was Nepal Sambat, kept alive by Newars, used to present in the UN as the calendar of Nepal; it was the music of Rajmati Kumati Song, the famous Newari Folk Song, used as the national anthem of Nepal for the first time in foreign land when Jung Bahadur had official visit in the Great Britain. These important information were attempted to hide in the history.

The statistics presented in OP reflects the large participation of Newars in Nepal Army, the icon of bravery in our society. But in general, the army profession is considered as a less promoted profession for a newar, and our society does not consider Newars fit for security jobs.

It is easy to make  a good talk with ideal wordings, but it is hard to erase arrogant feeling. Even if you don't care it now, you can not be fair if you need to decide who will be your bodyguard among the two boys - a newar and a gurung. It is likely that you may favor a gurung because you have once heard something against a newar in your childhood chitchat. Perhaps the above data could be eye-opener for those people who do not know about how much newar people are involved in security jobs. You can clearly sense arrogant and racist feeling among a few people who enjoy bashing a particular ethnic group despite saying that all human are equal.

The overall perspective in which CT wants to project the findings of this research seems to be prejudiced in the sense that an explanation against some popular belief is being forcefully deduced from the aspect of quantitative participation in the national army. Well, there could be several historical reasons for Newars being considered as relatively less courageous, however, the figures that show participation of Newars in the national army need not necessarily contradict the popular belief. Participation of Newars in most of the state organs is above their population proportion because they have been the primary residents of the capital of the country. So it's natural to find a substantial participation of Newars in the national army. Moreover, the Newar community is a largely heterogeneous community and it's natural to find persons who would not refrain from entering the army for a career. The fact that remains,  however, is to find how smart their performances have been. I can't agree with the Austrian researcher on the particular conclusion drawn. The conclusion would be sound had there been too low Newar recruitments in the army citing their so called relative cowardice.

Again, courageousness does  not necessarily imply smartness in fighting only or vice versa. Personally, I feel that there is some amount of truth in this particular popular belief, though the degree of the difference with other urban communities seems to be going down rapidly. This kind of lack of enthusiasm in getting involved in making risky moves is common among well-to-do urban people and Newars have been a major constituent of that. Coming from an old rich culture, with relatively better average stills and subsequent economic opportunities,  and a general tendency to remain 'in the middle' or reserved and safe, it must be natural for a major portion of the Newar population to be seen as less enthusiastic for am-bitious and risky competitions in which a major loss in terms of  personal fame or safety or economic prospects may not be ruled out.

That said, things are changing very fast. There have been major changes in the power centers and the way state authorities used to view various ethnic groups. The need is to rise above community lines and look for larger responsibilities of the state, manage well, and subsequently prove things to the contrary.

Lets take things lightly............
