Regarding nepotism in Kathmandu University, there has been number of letters published from the faculties as well as KUPA in e-kantipur (24-27 May). Similarly, there are other write-ups in Nepali languages dailies and weeklies. We, ex graduates of KU, have compiled all these and put them in the following blog;

I graduate from there and I worked at KU for 2 years. I felt the same way that they did. So left teaching job from there. Thanks for your views. Yeay, I agree with you that it's not that difficult if we do GM of both Suresh Raj Sharma and Sitaram. However, like you, I too was kicked out of KU when I have to come here for my masters. Why the rules are not equal for RAPUS and we all the sons of Nepali? .....Amazing.

Sharam is never tired of talking about the alumnis and he used all those chamchas, and of course ex-students of KU, to appoint his daughter as KUAA president also. What the heck other grads are doing? Can not other grads throws this VCPutri from the presidency?

काठमाडौंविश्वविद्यालयका उपकुलपति सुरेशराज शर्मा र रजिष्ट्रार सीताराम अधिकारीको अत्याचार सहिनसक्नु छ । शर्माका भाइ मुकुन्द उपाध्यायलाई प्रशासनिक प्रमुख र पछि व्यवस्थापन महाशाखाको प्रमुखमा नियुक्त गरिएको छ भने छोरी सिजन ढुङ्गेललाई मेनेजर पद जिम्मा लगाइएको छ । छोरीलाई किन एक्लै पार्नु भनेर उनैकी साथी ज्योति प्रधानलाई समेत सोही पदमा नियुक्ति दिइएको छ ।

डीन भद्रमान तुलाधरका छोरा डेनियल तुलाधरलाई असमयमै बढुवा गर्राई स्थायी जागिर ख्वाएका शर्माले कुरौटे, चम्चाहरुलाई पटक-पटक सःशुल्क विदेश पर्ठाई बढुवा गराइएका छन् । र, उनीहरुका परिवारलाई समेतलाई जागिरमा भर्ना गरिएको विषय विश्वविद्यालयका शिक्षकर्-कर्मचारीबीच चर्चाको विषय बनेको ।

शिक्षक छनौट प्रक्रियामा अनियमितता

कुनै पनि समय आफ्ना मानिसहरुलाई भर्ना गर्नुपर्दा आफ्नै ढङ्गबाट नियुक्त गर्ने र सरकारको उपस्थिति नरहेको बेला कर्मचारीहरुलाई स्थायी र बढुवा गरेको उदाहरण काठमाडौं विश्वविद्यालयमा पाउन सकिन्छ ।

बाबुका पालाका भान्से बाहुनदेखि लिएर भाइको ससुरालीसम्मका मानिसहरु भर्ना गरी सिङ्गो प्रसाशनिक भवन भरिएको छ । चाकडी नगर्ने योग्य शिक्षक र कर्मचारीलाई असुहाउदो र आपत्तिजनक नियम बनाई, पत्र थमाई जागिर खाने गरिएको उदाहरणहरु त्यहा प्रशस्त छन् ।

जीवनको एउटा सिङ्गो कार्यकाल सेवामा बिताएका शिक्षकहरुलाई गरिएको शोषणको हिसाब-किताब समयमा हुनेछ भन्ने पीडित शिक्षकहरुको राय छ ।

योग्य तथा साहसी शिक्षकहरुलाई अध्ययन बिदा दिने क्रममा देखिने र बुझिने किसिमबाट शोषण गरेर आफू शक्तिशाली भएको देखाउन खोजिएका प्रशस्त घटनाहरु दोहोरिदै आएका छन् । र, त्यस्ता कुराहरु कतैबाट कहिलै छानबिन भएनन् ।

शिक्षकहरुले विश्वविद्यालयको हकहितको लागि छलफल गर्न खोलिएको फोरमलाई चम्चाहरुमार्फ् लोभ र धम्की दिदै भाड्ने प्रयास गरेका शर्माले विद्यार्थीको भर्नाक्रममा अयोग्य आफन्तहरु तथा माथिल्लो तहका मानिसको आग्रहलाई मान्ने गरेको शिक्षकर्-कर्मचारीको माझ र्छलर्ङ्ग छ । त्यसैक्रममा योग्य विद्यार्थीहरु त्यहा अध्ययनबाट बञ्चित हुनुपरेको तीतो हरेक शैक्षिक सत्रमा चर्चाको विषय बन्नै गरैकौ ।

आर्थिक अनियमितता

सदनबाट पास गर्राई आफ्नो बुताले खोलेको विश्वविद्यालय ठानी लौरो टेकेर भए पनि आजन्म उपकुलपति र रजिष्ट्रार बन्ने षड्यन्त्र गरी त्यहीअनुरुपको संयन्त्र उनले तयार पारेका छन् ।

जोसुकै सरकार प्रमुख भए पनि उसैको दाबेदार भई जनतालाई गुमराहमा राखी आर्थिक अपारदर्शिता कायम राखेको, कुनै पनि आर्थिक कारोबारमा शिक्षकर्-कर्मचारीस"ग परामर्श नगर्ने, कथित 'क' श्रेणीको लेखापरीक्षकद्वारा लेखापरीक्षण गराइने भनी बाहिर सुनाए पनि भित्री रुपले कम्बल ओढेर घ्यू पिएको घटनाहरुबाटै उनको कालो नियत र्छलङ्ग हुन्छ ।

जनकपुर, बानेश्वर र धुलिखेलमा आलिशान दरबार बनाएर पनि नपुगेर विश्वविद्यालय परिसरभित्रै थरिथरिको अत्याधुनिक फ्ल्याट निर्माणगरि बस्ने शर्मा थरिथरिका भवन निर्माणको क्रममा कमिसनको खेलमा निर्लिप्त हुने गरेका छन् । विश्वविद्यालयको नाममा सरकारबाट करोडौं वाषिर्क आम्दानी प्राप्त हुने गरेको र देशी-विदेशी सहायताबाट प्राप्त रकमको समेत छानबिन कुनै निकायबाट कहिल्यै नहुने स्पष्ट छ ।

काठमाडौं विश्वविद्यालयमा शिक्षाको नाममा नाङ्गो व्यापार हुने गरेको छ । आर्थिक कारोबार रजिष्ट्रार र एकाउण्ट मेनेजरको हस्ताक्षरमा हुने गरेको छ । विश्वविद्यालयरुपी मन्दिरलाई नातावादको फोहोरी खेल खेल्ने अखडा बनाई दशौं करोडको आर्थिक हिनामिनामा उपकुलपतिका दुबै भाइहरु मदनराज शर्मा र जलनराज शर्मा अख्तियारको बयानका लागि धाइरहेको परिप्रेक्षमा
दाजुमाथि जनताले कारवाहीको माग गर्नु सम्पूर्ण नेपालीको अधिकार र जिमेवारी हौ ।

Totally agree with all these publication... Even I asked for a leave (eventough I asked for unpaid) for my study, but they didn't granted. I was a full time lecturer (also student from KU), I have to gave resignation. KU is not a place for a deserving academics, and good scholars, its a place only for चाकडीबाज र चम्चाबाज.
If u have a good links and u go to the office of Dean and registrar everyday and make them happy with fake words, for sure u'll get good remarks otherwise u'll be a aankha ko taro... I know one day all the deverving and good staff will either leave KU or fired by admin in the name of rule (which is NA to relatives of VC and registrar), and will be a worst university, if things will go on like this.. May god bless KU and its students...

जेठ १३ को पाठकमञ्चमा प्रकाशित काठमाडौं विश्वविद्यालयमा कार्यरत विश्वविद्यालय प्राध्यापक संघ तदर्थ समितिका तर्फबाट 'प्रशासनको मनोमानी' शीर्षक प्रतिक्रियाको समर्थन गर्छौं । प्रतिक्रियास्वरूप जेठ २० को तेस्रो पेजमा प्रकाशित विश्वविद्यालयका रजिष्ट्रारद्वारा प्रेषित 'काठमाडौं विश्वविद्यालयको विज्ञप्ति' प्रति असहमति जनाउँछौं ।

विज्ञप्तिका बुँदामा सत्यता छैन । सर्वसाधारण, बुद्धिजिवी, पत्रकार लगायत विश्वविद्यालयमा कार्यरत सबै कर्मचारी तथा विद्यार्थीलाई यसबारे प्रस्ट पार्न चाहन्छौं । विज्ञप्तिले विश्वविद्यालयका पीडित कर्मचारी तथा कर्मठ प्राध्यापकको चरित्रहत्या हुने किसिमको अभिव्यक्ति दिएको हाम्रो ठहर छ ।

चाखलाग्दो त के भने विश्वविद्यालयको शिक्षक तथा कर्मचारी सेवासर्त नियममा सात वर्षपछिको स्थायी बढुवासम्बन्धी सर्त प्रशासनमा कार्यरत कर्मचारीको हकमा नभई शिक्षक वर्गमा मात्र लागू हुँदै आइरहेछ । प्रशासनमा तलदेखि माथिसम्म उच्च पदाधिकारीका आफन्तको बहुल्य छ । नगण्य मात्रामा रहेका कर्मठ कर्मचारी अन्यायपूर्ण व्यवहारको सिकार बनेका छन् र पदोन्तिबाट वञ्चित छन् ।

उक्त नियम बमोजिम भन्दै पटक-पटक प्राध्यापकलाई योग्यता विकास गर्न नसकेको आरोपमा अवकाश दिइएको छ । विश्वविद्यालयका उच्च तहका पदाधिकारी र पदोन्नति छनोट समितिमा कार्यरत पदाधिकारीलाई हामी सोध्न चाहन्छौं- अहिलेसम्म जे-जस्ता प्रक्रियाबाट प्राध्यापकको स्थायी पदोन्नति भयो, के ती सबै योग्यता विकासबाटै भएका हुन् ? के आधारमा अवकाश दिइएकाहरूको तुलनामा छनोट गरिएका योग्य ठहरिए ? विश्वविद्यालयकै पहलमा विदेशमा अध्ययन गर्न पठाएरमात्र योग्यता विकास हुन्छ भन्ने मान्यता राख्ने हो भने किन सीमित प्राध्यापकलाई मात्र त्यो अवसर दिइन्छ ?

विश्वविद्यालयको पहलमा त्यहीं एमफिल कार्यक्रम सञ्चालन गरी सीमित प्राध्यापकलाई मात्र अवसर दिई पदोन्नति गराई स्थायी गरिएको छैन र ? उल्लिखित अवसरका लागि प्रयासरत रहँदा-रहँदै पनि त्यसो नगरी एक्कासी नौ-नौ वर्षपछि योग्यता विकास गर्न नसकिएको निष्कर्ष निकाली अवकाश दिनु कहाँसम्म न्यायपूर्ण छ ? स्थायी पदोन्नतिका लागि यिनै प्रक्रियामात्र पर्याप्त छन् ? शिक्षकहरूको विद्यार्थीप्रतिको जिम्मेवारी, अध्यापन क्षमता र प्राध्यापकप्रति विद्यार्थीको प्रतिक्रिया बुुझ्नु आवश्यक छैन ?

हामी यो पनि ध्यानाकर्षण गर्न चाहन्छौं कि एकै प्रकारको शैक्षिक योग्यता भएका प्राध्यापकमध्ये कसैलाई नियमअनुसार अध्यापन अवधि नपुगी पनि बढुवा गरिएको छ भने कसैलाई नौ-नौ वर्ष लगनसाथ अध्यापन गर्दा पनि योग्यता विकास गर्न नसकेको भनी अवकाश दिइएको छ । यस्तो व्यवहार न्यायोचित छ ?

सात वर्षे नियमका आधारमा एउटा हातमा अवकाश पत्र र अर्कोमा बढुवा पत्र थमाइदिई पुनः अस्थायी रूपमा नियुक्त गरी केही समयपछि विदेशमा सशुल्क अध्ययनका लागि मौका दिएको र फर्केर आउँदा स्थायी रूपमा पदोन्नति गरिएको उदाहरण पनि छ । स्नातकोत्तर डिग्रीका आधारमा मात्र पदोन्नति भएका उदाहरण पनि छन् । अवकाश दिइएका शिक्षक अयोग्य भएका हुन् भने ९/९ वर्षसम्म अध्यापन गराउँदा विश्वविद्यालय अनभिज्ञ हुनु आफैंमा विद्यार्थीमाथिको खेलवाड भन्ने बुझ्न सकिन्छ । अयोग्य भनी आरोपित शिक्षकको अयोग्यता बेलामै मूल्याङ्कन गर्न नसक्ने सम्बन्धित निकाय स्वयम् अक्षम ठहरिएन र ?

स्थायी पदोन्नतिका लागि सम्बन्धित निकायसमक्ष कुरा राख्दा पन्छिने काममात्र भयो । कुनै पनि तहबाट सुनियोजित तवरले यो विषयलाई सम्वेदनशील भएर हेरिएन । यी सबै विषयवस्तुको यथार्थ अगाडि ल्याउन आयोग गठन गरी न्यायपूर्ण छानबिन गर्न माग गर्छौं । नियमावलीलाई आड बनाएर कसैलाई काखा र कसैलाई पाखा लगाउने खेल हुनु हुँदैन ।

KU, I thought, was a private university. Does it really have to abide by the rules set by our moral standards?

I think it is best educational institution of Nepal, but I have been trying to get in touch through email and phone number they did not bother to answer me back. I was shocked and dismayed when I got nothing from them. This is another corrupt educatioal institutions of Nepal. I have seen one lady who graduated from this university even she does not know how to response phone call, what do you expect from such a intitution.

So bhadraman is still dean there? I remeber...his office was closer to entrance and we used to get so scared of being seen by him...everytime we walked by. oh man.

Good example that Nepal has a big comparative advantage for MONKEY BUSINESS.

I do not know much about KU except that it is now a brand name in higher education market in Nepal. In terms of KU's ability to command the market, it can be seen as a successful venture (in my evaluation). Out of my curiocity, I have talked with few KU graduates about the possible factors behind the success.

List of my usual questions and their responses.

Is the high academic standard in KU (as compared with TU) due to:

1. Higher quality of faculty members ? No, not significant difference between KU and TU
2. Better administrative management control? Yes, specially the maintanence of academic calender
3. No student/teacher politics? Yes, a significant factor
4. quality of entering students? Yes, a significant factor

And problems? Powerful VC and other excecutives !

Understadable! nothing comes as free !

Anyway, the current debate should play a positive role to ensure accountability and transparancy in the KU management. But I do not find much substance in the blame game. For example, I read the name of Mr. Damodar Gautam as an evidence of nepotism. If he is the former chief secretary, then offering him full professorship makes much sense.

If Sharma and Adhikary are clean and honest, why they are pleading with Hem Raj Gyawali not to publish letters and articles from the faculties and students of KU?

Maintainging academic schedule is something different from maintaing ethics and values.

Neutral! Concerning the quality of education, KU has only science, eng. management, and medicine program. the quality of these in TU is far better than that of KU. Just think about Teaching Hospital, Pulchowk Campus. If you consider the adminstration part, whole KU is smaller than even Saraswoti Campus or Trichandra Campus.I am graduated from KU and also worked there, I am not proud of KU at all for reasons.

If i establish a business i will opt for the people i can trust upon.

Whatever suresh raj sharma wants to do, let him do. IF people dont like the place they should just leave rather than crying NEPOTISM or fould play.

This is misconception that KU is a private organization. Suresh Raj Sharma did not create this organization from his own money. In KU, in everything there is tax payer's money and every Nepali from Mechi to Mahakali has every right to raise her/his voice for transparency in KU.

Suresh Raj and Sitaram are giving false impressions to thousands by claiming that they did everything. They are simply managers, who agreed to manage as they saw taht they could spoil the fruits of office.

If the credit has to go for the success of KU, then it should be like this;

(1) Self-financing and hard working students.

(2) Self-financing and meritorious students.

(3) Self-financing and decent students who do never complain even if teachers do not teach them properly.

(4) Self-financing but unlucky students who can not claim that their money has brought KU where it is now.

(5) Tuition-fee paying parents who bore with all the tantrum of KU managers i.e. Sharma and Adhikary

(6) Some good teachers who taught students with dedication (Not all the teachers)

Regarding the news of kantipur.

I think they wne to collect money from KU and they did not receive a penny. they got angry and wrote this report.
