I am looking to buy a laptop. I do not need anything fancy. I just use it for some basic stuff and for some work. Since sajha has some really computer savvy people, I hope I would get some decent suggestions about laptops.

Criteria:
Cheap, basic... would appreciate if you could explain some features about it. Its kinda urgent. Please help me.

indisguise bro, from wherever or whatever company u buy the notebook from, just be sure its equiped with intel's Mobile Itechnology Centrino ..wireless network is already hot and after 2 yrs or so, domestic flights within usa will also have wireless internet for free....

Yeah i have heard about it... do you ( or for that matter anyone who knows about it) know how much it might cost... I am just looking for something cheap and basic. But if i can see something i really in decent price, I am game.

it really depends on ur budget. If you are willing to go uptil 1300-1400 then i would highly recomment the HP Pavillion zt3000. I'm using one right now, and i'm thoroughly satisfied, even with linux on it. It is a centrino based laptop with wireless, DVD writer (if you choose to add one), 15.4" screen. Its a really nice machine.

I'd advice you to buy something secondhand and cheap but with decent processors and other features... Just don't expect it to run forever but at most 2 years, or just a year... and next time, do the same thing... Brand new kinera no faida... I guess... khaali show off matrai ho... eheh...

I have a brand new VAIO bhanyo, few girls might be impressed, hehe.. ani tyatti ho. End of the story. :)

I would suggest Intel Centrino for processor. It's awesome. The battery lasts for upto 8 hours. Other processors give a max of 3-4 hrs. IBM thinkpad T40-41 or sony VAIO (I don't know the makes) are the best but might be costly. Dell is cheaper so you might wanna check it out. Here're some specs to look for.
At least 512 Megs Ram
At least 333 MHz Ram (PC 2700)
Faster FSB (Front side bus) will be better
At least ATA 100 Hard Drive. ATA 133 will be better but a cache in hard drive will be just as good. Hard drive should be at least 7200 RPM. (Speed)
Look for a DVD burner and CD\RW
Look for a DDR (Double Data Rate) 64 Megs Video Card if you don't intend to play games. If you play games then you need more Video card memory but for most applications 64 is more than enough.
Look for free softwares that come with the system. Microsoft Office is a must unless somebody can hook you up with that. You will probably save some money.
Warranty Virus Protection is also important unless somebody will hook you up with that also.
You might wanna check out Pricewatch website if you're looking for deals.
