Once a king in ancient Bharat Varsha asked a yogi,"What is life?" The yogi replied, "A man is born, he suffers, and then he dies!"

I keep reading this kind of articles from many Nepalese living in US. From one point of view, their outcry is justified; they invested over 10 years of their precious time, got away from their family and took huge loan to come and study in US. But what do they have to show for themselves? A job in consultancy that didn’t require any of those things?
My few cents:

1. USA or any US institutions (unless it’s one of those fraudulent for-profit colleges) never requested you to come over here and guaranteed a return. Hope is one thing, expectation is different. Even if you finish your doctorate with honors you aren’t entitled to anything.
2. Be happy you are getting a consultancy gig. Think of what would have happened to thousands of Nepalis living in US had it not been those consultancies and their resume-padding ways.
3. With proper education, you can make consultancy just an entry foyer – then it is up to you to expand your potential.
4. No, consultancy is not the only thing Nepalis in US are employed in. Yes, a huge chunk are – but few are employed in other well rewarding ventures.
5. You said you took a huge loan. Unless you took a loan to send back home, I am not hearing it. I came here with minimum amount in my pocket. I went to State universities that had lowest cost and I worked day and night to fund my education. I didn’t spend time partying or thinking there’s loan to take care of my education. So stop crying about the loan – you chose it – it wasn’t your desperation.
6. Be happy with what you have and strive for more. Your education allows you to expand your horizon. Remember, gig in IT might be short lived, treat it as a temp stop until you find something you like. Unless of course you want to make IT your career, which can be equally rewarding as well.

Yes , be happy with what you have. if you landed in a consultancy and still not happy with it , either you are not good at what you do or you chose the field that you dont like. I think the important part is to find what you love. It took me 3 majors and 7 years to find what I like ..it came with its own form of struggle ...but after I realized what I wanted to become things started to align better and got lot easier. I got offers based on the enthusiasm I had for the job, rather than the skills I had for it.

I was one of those who was scared to go through consultancies because I didn't think I would survive the pressure and lying. I though it would be easier to get a fancy full time after college but 3 months down the road waiting , I got an only offer from the smallest of startups , there were 3 employees in that company. The office space was smaller than my 1 bedroom studio and we were working about 16 hours a day. Not because we were building another facebook in there but mostly because we were so amature on what we were doing that it would take us hours to figure out a simple issue. Everything I learnt in college felt worthless , every new technology was a beast of its own so it was like another form of school were we would go through the admin guides for days and try to implement it. I was frustrated , underpaid and mostly overwhelmed by the things I needed to learn, but after a year things got a lot better ...I was getting offers from bigger companies and finally accepted an offer from a company and have been working there since. I still have a lot of aspirations and feel somewhat unsatisfied with myself but when I look back, I feel like I came a long way up from getting expelled from 2 high schools back home and almost failing it.

Consultancy folks I know have similar struggles , I see them studying and working after hours to getup to speed at work. In the end the take-away is to stay happy with what you have and learn to love what you do.

PS. the startup that I worked for was sold for 8 Mils last year.

This is the story of almost all nepalis in US. I was frustrated like you few years ago hence i came to Sajha and created a userid with name "Frustu". You can imagine how frustrated i was !

Life is not easy in US. Just because one has Masters or PhD doesn't guarantee anything. I have seen many folks who has done 2-3 Masters Degree and working in Restaurants to maintain that F1 status. Many folks that went to PhD thinking it would be lot easier to land a high paying job after PhD are frustrated as hell as they now realize it's difficult to land a job even with PhD. Some folks did PhD in some random subject which they had no clue about and quit in the middle of PhD program. Some who completed PhD are taking online training with some Dhoti Consultancies. Sad but true.

Imagine the extent of frustration of these folks with PhD and doing training in IT to get a Job ? Most of folks who came to US at 19-20 yrs of age are 30-33 now and without a Job and yet to get Married ! and they compare with someone who finished Bachelors in Computer Science 7 years ago and is now working as a Senior Business Analyst or Lead Analyst at a Fortune 500 company and that brings more frustration right ?

Now Let's get back to your question: Why study ?
if you have a degree and even if you get a Job through any consultancy it's more likely that you'll do okay in the job compared to someone without any degree. Take it as an Entry and you have to use your abilities, skills and whatever you learnt in school to expand your career. Most DV holders who immediately went to consultancy and got a first project are more likely to get fired. This is where you've to be able to show your education.

Instead of getting frustrated, first of all find something you really like an go from there. work hard, study hard and achieve what you want to achieve. you won't gain anything complaining . That's life.

Yes not everyone in the same boat. Some are doing excellent. Some are doing ok. And some are hopeless. But for sure to come out as a winner in USA is quite a hard work .

This is an excellent thread, in that the problem posed is something shared by many students and the suggestions are precisely to the point. I am adding a lame point to all these excellent suggestions. Again my two cents. The business and economic model of free markets reward company's stock based on projected outlook and reflections from their current financial statements. Did they beat analyst's estimate? For past 20 years trends in economizing efficiency and speed led the Jeff Bezos and Jamie Dimons of the world to invest in Pentaho and SAS rather than in suction tubes. You already know the stale story --> Late 30's at the peak of Motor City success Ford employed more than 90000 workers; 2008 Volkswagen's Chattanooga Plant, that can churn more automobile in 3 months than what Ford did, only has 3200 people. It's not that companies are deliberately looking for vintage smelly hairy chubby women who can eloquently mis-speak English and make an accent while they secretly rote learn Regression Testing vs. Black Box Testing. Share Holder Value Maximization driven corporate world creates immense churn for projects that solve things now and in this quarter and this fiscal. While Googles of the world exist for the good ones, for the smart Liberal Arts Major who makes 6 figures at the 13th Floor office in Exchange Place, the BOAs, The UHGs, The Morgan Stanleys need us to MS Excellify their regression tests. There is demand for both X-art and Mallu Aunty. Sorry they forced a porn you didn't wanted to see.

Yeha sathi haru ali dherai nai depressed bhako dekhiyo.

Teha ko kaam sikchan, coding sikchan, ani full time kaam pauchan. IT company haru nepali le kholeka thuprai chan.

Espaali balla H1B paryo. Aasti ko paali naparera. Ahile ali Nepali lai gaaro bhayeko yo H1B ma limitation bahyera ho. 2 ta 3 ta masters garnu pareko. Natra ta yo consultancy ma chirera H1B garera, GC garera ramro sanga baseka dherai chan.

He made it to the USA at 19 and now he is 30 something, after a decade and 60 k later, that guy still has some major growing up to do.
Formal degrees from colleges should have instilled in him a sense of inadequacy of 'formal education' and respect for people from all walks of life.
With I'm de facto smarter than DV winners and asylum seekers ( that insinuate his false sense of entitlement), hence I should be rewarded most attitude, he has failed to realize the quintessential ingredient of American Exceptionalism.
With this attitude, he won't survive in IT. He is probably better off going back to Nepal and enjoying his inheritance while it lasts, or grow up and realize that learning is a lifelong process, often without piece of paper formalizing it.

My 2 cents.

Kinda agree with Gandharba.

It's almost as if he is complaining that DV winners with only high-school education are getting the same job that he is getting. Dude, it's IT. You are getting this job because your resume is padded and it doesn't have strict education requirement like other jobs (say economist, engineer, doctor, lawyer etc). If you have higher education, that will always help you move up in IT. Don't look at what others have, look at what you got- and believe me, you will only realize what you got was great once you lose it.
