Buddhiman,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
As we all know ERP in general has huge scope right now and there are many possible career growth. Could you share some info. in getting into ERP market? There are few people who are working in different industries who worked on those because of H1 and GC but their true interest is in ERP, System Analyst etc.
Would you mind sharing insite?

Thanks!

For internship you need to get into company which has SAP . The last place i was working on an Indian Girl got into the company as an intern, now she is a permannet employee there. The catch here is What if they do not hire you after internship period.. then situation becomes difficult .. problems with your status and all the stuff.

Like I said before you need to pick relevant field of SAP based on your degree. If you are Mechanical engineer/production engineer SAP SD/PP will be great, for finance definately FICO. The problem with SAP is it is a very high end job so you are constantly under a radar. and you need to keep yourself updated with new technologies all the time if you are looking for a long term career in SAP. And the problem again for us NEpali is the cost. Each certification you write costs 1000$ and there is no gurantee you'll pass :(

ya Buddiman,
all the training and certification are very expensive compared to other facets of of IT & Business.

Just wondering if the return in same ratio as the input?

I am interested in SAP as I like to work in business and IT at the same time. I am interested mainly in SAP-BW as it gives you a wide project data for analysis with an objective to developfuture business strategy development, forecast business trends etc..

There are both kind. But to work as regular employee the compnay need to hire you .. Most of the people work through top 5 consulting companies like Deloitte, HP, IBM, Bearing Point many big companies donot consider other consulting companies, Indian ones (barring Wipro, Infosys). All the other Indian consulting companies are just brokers or middle man. If you have to go through them it will take a substantial time to get a job. But if you are a fresher most of the time it is the only way to go as for SAP the minimum experience you need to ahve is 2 years to get into all those big 5 companies, also the main clause of jobs is travel time =90-100%. So if you ahve a family and you are married it is a tough decision.

Thanks Budhiman,
I thought Deloitte's consulting was more geared towards Business Risk. I have a friend working there, they do mostly implementation documentation and stuff but isn’t purely IT. Is Cap Gemini a good one too? Ernst & Young Sold its consulting business to Cap Gemini few years back.
I believe Accenture does it too but they do not sponsor H1 and/or GC.
I am pretty new in the field myself. As I am young and capable I am thinking of possibilities for the bright future. I don’t know details of Corp. US Lego’s. Could you please put some light on roles and responsibilities of different positions and their roles are in the business, eg Business Analyst, Software Architect, IT – Business Liaison etc.
I would like more IT stuff but at the same time some business. I have double major is IT and Business and I like the IT part better. (never understood why so many ppl hated programming classes ;) hehehe)
Thanks so much for your contribution in our ERP threads.

Buddiman:

then what do you suggest for a fresher? I talked with a consultancy and he told me to learn about warehousing, report something like that. THe problem is we are new and we cannot get jobs/internship without the consultancies. It is not like we are studying at Ivy LEagues you see.. So what do you think is the best starting jobs for the Finance students..... appreciate your input..

Sheetalb,
As a Finance major you are a good fit for differnt positions in a corporation. It doesnt have to be ERP. I suggest you apply to companies directly. It is hard I know coz most of the co. these days refrain from sponcering. However, you might get lucky. You never know, there might be a job waiting for you :).
It depends in your location and what type of business there are.
Are you in east cost?

Sheetalb,
If you want to go in SAP and with concentration on warehousing, Business Warehousing module (BW) of SAP is the one you need to work with.

as my experience of having MBA after computer engineering, what I suggest you to go for SAP FI/CO with suits best for you. If you really wanna go in warehousing (BW), most probably you can work to analyze financial data for the future forecast.

Hope it helps you in some way.

LOVE NEPAL ALWAYS :)

Sheetal Business Analyst is the a better job or SAP FI/CO. Data Warehousing is a IT job fit for computer Engineering ppl or ppl who prefer IT. Also since you are a finance major look for positions in finance consulting firms or banks . I know 2 of my friends directly got job in such places. If you come to SAP you need to have aptience to get your first break.

sheetalb,
I agree with you. SAP is a big stuff and takes time to understand the overallconcept and the multiple modules available in it. Once you learn the overall concept of SAP and can decide which module to go with, you are in track. Many people make mistake choosing the right module for them.

And at the time when you are getting started, best thing is to discuss with many people and take ideas from them. As for I understand, SAP FI/CO is best module for you. And as buddiman has suggested, Business Analyst is also a good field for you. Just for your information, check http://sap.ittoolbox.com/ if you want to meet some experts in SAP fields and take their suggestions. It's a good forum to consult.

LOVE NEPAL ALWAYS :)

This question might sound funny to you IT experts. But then i do only have limited knowledge in IT however, i think i am a fast learner. I have used few modules in the class but besides than that i have no IT working experience.

So a month/2 month training is FICO is enough to start with in the job? or it is really a complicated subject line. Please give me your valuable inputs..... Thanks

Sheetalb,
I think 2 months is enough to learn the FICO module.
Generally, it is 1 month training as I have seen on website.

The training prepares you 10%. Remaining 90% you have to learn on your own. If you are dedicated and can spens substantial time you can do it. All the training classes teach only the basics like navigation and front end stuff which are relevant only when you are in Test environment.

Thanks. It seem overwhelming but then i can also relate to the topics at least---they are all financial terms and hopefully i would be able to manage it.

Buddiman - do people with no finance background (only IT) also work as SAP-FICO professionals? I am just curious.

Yes SAP FICO is not at all related to IT. It is not a IT job as many people will think! Of course you need to know to navigate around the software and know how to operate the computer other than that it is finance all the way.
