The answer is 8004. slowpoison was on track. when page 1 is eaten, so is page 2 on the other side. same with the last page, you gotta count the 2nd last page as well.

8004. first two pages of volume 1. all the pages of volumes 2-9 and then last two pages of volume 10. (imagine the volumes on a bookshelf from left to right). Here's another one: You have one 4-minute hourglass (or sandglass) and another 7-minute hourglass. How do you measure 9 minutes using these two?

1. Start both hourglass until 4-min glass hourglass gives the full reading. Now, time = 4 min. reading remained in 7-hg is 3 min. 2. Again start 4 hg from begining with 7-hg which has 3 min left. 3. After three min 7-hg completes its cycle. In 4 hg there is still 1 min reading is remained. Up to this time total time recorded is 7 min. 4. Start 7 hg glass again along with 4 hg having 1 min reading left. 5. After one min, cycle is completed for 4 hg. Now on the bottom part of 7 hg 1 min reading is remained. Upto here total time is 8 min. 1 more to go. 6. Reverse 7 hg to make 9 min.

You got it right slowpoison.. I'll try to put it in a simpler way: 1. Start both hourglasses. 2. When the 4-min hourglass runs out, turn it over (4 mins gone, 3 mins left on 7-min hourglass) 3. When the 7-min hourglass runs out, turn it over (7 mins gone, 1 min left on 4-min hourglass) 4. When the 4-min hourglass runs out (8 mins gone), turn the 7-min hourglass over (it has only been running for 1 min). When it runs out, 9 mins have elapsed. Aashish, the questions says each volume has 1000 pages. Anyway the answer is not as simple as X * 1000 pages. Imagine the ten books on a bookshelf, lined up together, left to right. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The answer would be 10 * 1000 = 10,000 only if the bookworm started eating from the last page of volume 1 (on the outer left) and finished eating the 1st page of volume 10 (on the outer right). The 1st page of volume 1 is in the inner left and the last page of volume 10 is in the inner right.

Rope puzzle: Rope A and Rope B are of different lengths and thickness, but each burns in exactly 1 hour. How would you measure 45 mins by burning the ropes? You can't cut the ropes. The ropes aren't uniform either (i.e. if you burn a rope upto its midpoint, it doesn't necessarily mean that 1/2 hour's elapsed).

Read the following sentence quickly once and only once and count the number of Fs in it. FINISHED FILES ARE THE RE- SULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIF- IC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS. Now re-read it slowly and count more carefully. Any difference?

Are the information for Rope Puzzle sufficient? Or we have to assume something? I have already tried the letter F-case. Intresting!

Buddy, we here post puzzles and try to answer them and explain our logic behind the solutions. It is up to you to try and understand the logic. Hey, you know what? I can't climb Mount Everest, so it's the worst mountain ever and full of s h i t !

If thats the case my logic is the first page of vol 1 is indeed page 1 and the last page of vol 10 is indeed page 100. so why am I wrong??? thats my logic...I know it doesnt match with urs but still its a logic right.... how can u confidently say its wrong....unless u made a mistake posting the question. Ok now tell me one more thing...which grade are u in 5 or 6????

the question posted by republican is not worng. Aashish! why you are cofused with such a simple logic. In the book-shelf, the first page of the book faces to the right and last page to left. This is the main logic behind the question. Start with this logic.

SlowPoison, is that how someone suppose to arrange Encyclopedia on book shelf? I did not know of that and never have came across such an arrangement. About the Rope's solution, one possible way is probably double fold the thick and short rope, burn it ( which burns for 30 min) and right after it burns out brun the four folded long and thin rope ( which burns for 15 min), just guessing here.
