Nepali youth shot dead in US

Kantipur Report
KATHMANDU, Aug 28 - A 21-year-old Nepali student was found dead in Baltimore next to a gas pump at the Tedxaco station in Northwest Baltimore in the United States Monday.

The deceased identified as Himank Karki, a resident of Biratnagar, was shot at by two unidentified criminals, who could have been robbers, the Baltimore Sun quoted police as saying. He died on the spot.

Karki, who was in the United States on a student visa, was to have attended his first day of classes at Baltimore City Community College on Monday itself.

His body was taken to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

Karki was working from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift at the gas station. It was not known how long he had worked at the gas station in the 2600 block of Gwynns Falls Parkway near Koko Lane, the report added.

According to the local police, the owner of the gas station had restricted Karki from leaving the station office during the working hours.

Police was not sure whether Karki had left the office on his own or whether he was lured outside. They also declined to say if there were any obvious signs of a robbery.

Police said Karki's roommate contacted the victim's family in Nepal and told them of Karki's death

Very sad news…..
When I was in college, I used to work in a Gas Station so I could earn some money to pay my bills. One day, I was robbed at Gun Point as well. I quit that job and started working at a mall. Thanks god I was escaped unharmed. I had heard that one Indian was shot to death in cross-street Gas Station just a year ago. There are very few Gas Station attendees who were not robbed at least once while working at a Gas Station. We do not always have choices of switching jobs I think we need to use caution. For most of Gas Station owners, YOUR SAFTY IS A LAST THING THEY HAVE IN THEIR MIND…
If you have to work in a Gas Station please make sure:
* Avoid working on Grave Yard Shifts. If you have to work on night shifts, close the doors and carry out transactions through windows. Some greedy owners prefer to open the door all night for little more business so if you can’t convince them, anonymously complain to LABOR department about unsafe working environment or QUIT.
* Make sure Station is properly equipped with surveillance camera and have your manager post a sign on the door that reads” Store is under surveillance camera".
* Try to find a job in less crime area. Usually Gas Stations that are located in high crime rate usually pay you little better because they have hard time keeping employees for long. Just because you are getting few cents more, do not take that job.
* Light up station in-and-out after dark. Poorly lighted station is more likely victims of such crimes. (My greedy owner used to turn OFF half of canopy lights out-side so he could save electric bill but I would turn them back on the minute he left)
* Do not stack any items which blocks your outside views. If you see any suspicious activity, report immediately and make sure you can escape to safety.
* Do not unnecessarily argue with customer whether they are black white or purple.
* If robbery is eminent, do not resist them however do not go to office or storage area if they tell you to do so.
* Try to avoid working alone. If possible, convince your manager to have at least 2 people at all time.

Most of all be vigilance and use your common sense. IF you do not feel comfortable working there anymore please QUIT. Nothing is more precious for you than your LIFE and think about the aftermath… What would happen to your family….
I am glad I quit because the Station I used to work has been robbed at least 10 more times since I left.
I know most of you already know about it but it never hurt to remind you one more time…
