I have 11hr layover (on the way to Nepal) and 5 hr transit (back to the States). They're both during the daytime. Will I need visa or any other document to stay in the airport? What about if I want to get out and see places around?

Appreciate the help.

I had a layover in HKK too and didn't need it so you might wanna check with your airlines.

Thanks for the input fellas. I just found out that transit visa is not required as long as I stay in the airport.
Mercynova, 18 hrs?? How did you manage to kill your time?

I was there for 12 hours a couple years ago. I am fairly certain you do not need a visa if you stay inside the airport. I would suggest you download movies/take dvds with you and kill your time. Also, if you don't have one already, buy a UK/Hongkong prong adapter, since the American ones don't work there.  I forgot to take mine on my way home, and my laptop died within the first couple hours. They are fairly cheap.

 thanks thameltube.
and for anyone else travelling through HK, here's what the HK Immigration Department told me when I asked them if I can get something like a 1-day pass to visit places around during the transit:

Under the prevailing immigration policy, nationals of Nepalese require visa to enter Hong Kong for whatever purpose, including those who are in transit and remain on the airside.

There are however temporary arrangements under which the visa requirement is temporarily suspended forNepalese airside transit passengers when travelling from certain countries back to their own country when their airside transit period is less than 12 hours in Hong Kong, and subject to the fulfillment of conditions by both the passenger and the carrying airline.  In this connection, please enquire the carrying airline to see if your case would suit the temporary arrangements.

If you intend to have a leisure visit to Hong Kong, you are required to apply for a visa.  Details of the visa application is outlined in website http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/id1004.htm.

I had heard that if you are flying Dragon Air / Cathay Pacific, then you don't need transit visa.  For other airlines, you do.  This information might be obsolete.

You're right nepali_american; that's what I was told. I guess that's the "temporary arrangement" the Immigration Department is talking about.
