My OPT started from July, 2011 and it ends in july, 2012. i haven't found any jobs so far. I am thinking of going back to old school. It has masters program where i can get admitted. Since its already November 12th, am i out of status? What should i do next? reinstatement?

you just said that your OPT expires July 2012; that means you are not out of status unless you have done something else to put yourself out of status. you still have 7-8 months before your OPT expires and it's good that you've already started to think about what you're going to do when your OPT expires. here are a few alternatives:
- apply for OPT extension; check here if your major qualifies for OPT extension: http://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/stem-list-2011.pdf
- go back to school for a higher degree
- find a job by the time your OPT expires
- be prepared to leave the states when your OPT expires

hope that helps.

So, what about the record of employment? i dont work anywhere. Dont you have to do tax-paying jobs in OPT?

To my knowledge, u still get about 90 days after expiration of OPT. And about the tax paying jobs, OPT students should not have to pay medicare ans social security taxes as long as they are on OPT. But will have to pay federal taxes. Wherever, u work try to get CPT if it favors on ur side.
But, hey! higher knowledge is always better, not moneywise though :(!

Good luck!

What? you're in your OPT and you don't work anywhere? what do you do with your time then man? are you just fooling around everyday all day? i don't quite understand your situation. and in response to your question - you work in the field that's related to your major and yes, you do pay federal and state taxes on whatever you earn from your job.

What I think is he is working but not the way its supposed to be. For extensin,OPT has to be in STEM and job should be related to that too. So it sounds like Preparing really good for GRE is  a  good option.

Sucks,
           here's what you should do:

1. if you are a STEM major, get your OPT extended. There are consultancies that do it for you if you join them; if you do not want to join them, they will charge you a few hundred dollars for it.

2. If you aren't a STEM major, prepare to join a college. There are a tonne of colleges that will let you in into their masters programme without a GRE.

Literally you are out of status if you havent notified your DSO about where you woking or volunteering related to your major. You should notify in written within 3 months after your OPT start date or should a have gone to school if you could not find job within that 3 months. However, I dont think USCIS will keep track of the OPT students about where they working related to their majors or not because they have lot of other sh*t to take care of. BUT!!! Just to be on safe side, I urge you to get I-20 ASAP. You never know when you get knock at your door or get surprise letter in the mailbox. By law you should be either working in the field related to your major and notify the DSO about it or you should be gone home/school by now.

Don't worry about it. A lot of my friends worked in Restaurants, Gas Stations and Pizza places during OPT (some are doing their Masters in Accountancy, Engineer, Computer Science, MBA) etc...

Just work anywhere. Work in a gas station or somewhere else. Baru ahile dekhi nai MBA ko preparation suru garnu.

I've had my frens done CPT thru mall cart job and restaurant( i respect any job) .Well, for CP,. u have to join some college. Try some places where they offer online degrees, I think california does that. I personally I dont know, but i can ask my friends if its ur option!  Why don't u try going back to ur own university so that way, u dont need GRE/GMAT.

Good luck!
