Do you know why phone calls to Nepal are still expensive (relatively). It is well known fact that price has gone down significantly in recent years but not as much as I think it should have been.Kathmandu is connected with optical fiber with outside world via India. India and Bangladesh are enjoying their 1 cent per minute from US while Nepal it is many folds more.

Is it due to destination charge imposed by NTC? or some other reason. Can anyone please explain why it is so. Thanks.

Nepalese politicians still think that hiking phone call price will limit information flow to people abroad.... they still believe in the strategy once opted by Rana Dynasty of imposing Nepalese in dark age by cutting them off from the world.

I was also thinking the same. calls to india pak and bangladesh is cheap but to nepal and esp. out of kathmandu valley its still in excess of 10,11 cents a min . why is so ? is that only due to technical reasons or any other .  ?

S in Sari,

Do you work for NTC? I think there is high tarrif charged by NTC on incoming call. No wonder NTC is the highest revenue making corporation in Nepal. Its employee are one of the highest paid - in addition to salary they are paid bonus for 10 months salary.

Imagine the situation here: you are a public utility company, your employee are best paid, your service are lousy and expensive and you are the only to provide that service.

Hallmark of Nepalese people,
  • Complaining all the time  of anything. Never satisfy.
Never, Never thankful. Thats why you guys are thousand miles away from Motherland, struggling life, worship money, and again at the end of the night, complain!!!!!

But I haven't seen any Nepalese parents suggest their kids to do something for the country, but they will say, take me away from Nepal. They will tell their kids, money is everything. very poor advise.

Nepalese society is a society where nobody wants to take responsibilities.

It is still relatively cheaper to call Nepal from USA. I live in UK, but due to my work, I travel a lot in Spain and in France and from those countries, it costs a lot to call Nepal. I pay almost 50 cents per minute with a phone card. Does anyone know if there is a cheaper way to call Nepal from western europe? That would help me a lot.

Phone cards are the cheaper way to go or you will need Vonage or Majic jack installed in Nepal depending on the volume of calls you make.
