Last week we were approved for PR to Canada under Provincial Nominee. I am in dilemma whether to move permanently there or not. I don’t have any friends or relatives in Canada, so I am having hard time to make decision. I am honestly seeking good advices from people who have moved to Alberta from US or who are familiar with this kind of situations.

 

Here’s my scenario

 

I have been working for a non-profit organization on H1B but there is no chance that I will be sponsored for green-card. I have 2 more years to look for alternatives, either go to school for PhD or look for other job sponsoring green card.

 

My husband works for a company, but got laid off last week. He was working in H1B with Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering.  He has 2 options: change to H4 or go to school. Though has been accepted in master program, doesn’t have any interest to go for it, will be in same condition after 2 years, same status problem.

 

I called the family back home for suggestions. They aren’t happy about moving to Canada (also don’t know about my husband loosing job). They heard from somewhere that life is too frustrating in Canada, hard to find a job, high taxes and so many other things, which I don’t think is totally true.

 

I have been thinking hard but still not able to decide. I humbly request the Sajha Users who have information about this, suggest me. Your suggestions will really help me to make an appropriate decision.

 

 

palpali kancha, I understand your delima, I too have heard that life in Canada is kinda tough. Try to seek some jobs in monstor and or canadian job site. If you have 2 yrs remaning in your h1b I would suggest you to seek other alternatives here in the US, I know its much easier said than done, but I would say flip every stones that you have to.

About your husband its best to go to college or try to find some consultants that transfers his h1b and try looking for jobs that will buy him extra time. and hopefully everything will return back to normal in the economy. I truely belive if you can survive 09 and half of 10 here things will get better.

That is the best solution for this time. It seems you should move to Alberta, because of your current situation. I am also planning to do so. I am on H1B since last October, and I am on project now. Will they accept like us who is working as H1B for less than a year? Please let me know. When did you apply and when is it approved? I mean how long does it take from applying to approving process? Thinking that we will be following you..... and you guys will be able to suggest us, whether we should come there or not

At my best understanding, you don't need to be in H1B for a year, if you have 1 year experience in the related field. Even the expereince as TA/RA works, if it was  in the same field you are working right now. 

Total processing time in my case was around 8 month. I hope Iam able to answer your questions

I would recommend you to opt for Alberta. You are never sure when you will laid off. The advantage of PR is, you don't have to worry about your status any more. Also after 3 years you will have option to apply for citizenship. Once you get your citizenship you can always come back to USA and work under TN visa. I think spending money on education simply to maintain status in not a good idea.

People in Nepal believe in "Halla ko kheti". They don't know anything about free health care in Alberta, good education system, and safe environment in Canada. Yes it will definitely be diffiuclt to get job in Canada with Nepalese certificate. If you have American experience and education then why do you worry about finding job ? Are you that bad at communicating, or marketing your resume ?

I think securing your future through Canadian PR seems both safe as well as satisfactory given the scenario of your H1 status and your husband. Of course, life is all about experiences and at times we should be able to assume some calculated risks. You might have to spend another few years here in US under stress and anxiety as what's next while you might be jobless for only few months if you opt for canadian PR. Canada is one of the strongest economy in the world and it's ever growing. The lifestyle pretty much resembles to US. I was in toronto city with some friends last year; many nepalis are doing great there who urged me to move in there though I've US GC. Speak of your husband's situation with family and work out for a solution as such you already have a good solution. Truth hurts for a moment but ignorance is life long agony. Good luck in your efforts.

Hey guys - if you apply for Alberta program, how long one has to stay in Alberta before moving to other parts of Canada or you can move to other parts of Canada right from the beginning? Please help

Don't worry about moving to Alberta. Target for Calgary, and do contact Nepalese Association http://www.calgarynepalese.ca/  This association helps a lot to the new comers to Calgary, as I heard. Recently 25 Bhutanese Refugee families went to Calgary and this assoication is helping all of them to settle down in Calgary by extending every possible assistances - like providing with used utensils, clothes, arrangement of accommodation, and so on. Hope this helps. For finding job also, it will help you a lot in networking and giving you insider's tips in grabbing jobs in Calgary. There are bunch of very successful Nepalese in this association with high level postions. Ulike other nepalese, these high level job holders are very down to earth people, and they help all the new comers with their hearts and souls. A very commendable job.

I am also moving to canada from US in couple of months , my situation is  pretty much like palpali kanchhi- H1B -no project- benched - no hope for GC  . I got approval under FSW and ready to move anywhere in canada. I have started vigorously searching/applying for jobs in all parts of canada  in my field (MBA - information systems - from USA) but haven't got any positive response so far .

what documents did you submit and how many pay stub did you had to submit. Are you still on h1b or do you have to be still on h1b once you are nominated for the program. Can I be out of status once I get nominated certificate; Did they still keep on asking your status once you are nominated and how long it took you for the whole process phase by phase. I will be thankful for your kind advice.
