Missouri City Store Clerk Murdered During Convenience Store Robbery
by Bob Dunn

A Missouri City convenience store clerk was shot with a rifle and killed during a robbery Sunday night.

Bhattarai Ashok, 21, of Houston, was found dead next to the cash register at about 10:10 p.m. at the First Stop Food Store, at 2563 Cartwright Road. Police arrived after receiving a call that a man was down at the store.

A police spokesman said Ashok had been shot to death. Surveillence video Missouri City Police detectives obtained showed a black man about 5 feet, 10 inches tall wearing a do-rag opened the door to the store and fired a rifle, striking Ashok.

The assailant then walked over to a safe that Ashok had just opened, pulled out about $5,000 in cash and walked out, police reports said.

The police spokesman said a second clerk was in the cooler re-stocking the store while the shooting and robbery occurred, and apparently didn't hear anything.

"We're looking at the videos - not only from last night, but during the whole day," in hopes of more information, the police spokesman said. The case is being treated as a homicide investigation.

Ashok's family, from the Dallas area, was informed of his death Monday morning.

I happened to receive a call yesterday from a fellow Houstonian who knew Ashok personally. Ashok's roommate had left for Nepal on Sunday, and had sent some gifts to his family including an iphone. I can only imagine how his family must be feeling learning about his death and receiving the gifts afterwards.  Furthermore, all this happened right before Dashain.  Meanwhile, I have pasted part of an email sent by my father.

batti aaeko khabarle khusi lagyo tara houstonko gas stationma ekjana nirdos nepali marieko khabarle bhane dukkha lagyo.  paisa kharcha garera, kati dukha garera america apugchhan, ti maddhe katipaya yasari akalmai marinchan.  timile bheteka nepalilai sakbhar gas stationma ra raatko samayama department storema kaam nagarna salaha deu

I know it is very difficult to avoid such jobs, but again it is always worth seeking better alternatives.

Once again, my heart really goes to the family and loved ones of the deceased. May the departed soul rest in peace.

Someone Killed a Nepali; Nepalese are raising fund to send the deceased's body home.  I personally think at least someone should file a lawsuit on his behalf and drag the owner to the court.  There must be a settlement of at least $1MM.  The deceased was here to make his and his family's life better, but his life and his parent's dream was snatched.  One of my friend's father was also shot.  Since this is a criminal case, the government will bring the criminal to justice one day, but that won't fulfill his dream.  As such, this incident warrants a lawsuit so that his dream could at least be partially satisfied--a dream to make his family happy.  I know these Ismalies will try to lure the deceased's family by mere 5-10 thousand, but this case must stop the tradition of getting innocent hardworking people killed.

Wake up Gurkhas and demand your rights to work safe!!!

May Lord Pashupatinath bless his family!!!

He is from Nawalparasi not from Biratnagar. He is one of my best friend  and we studied together in college(NIST) 2003 BATCH. HE is not only a good student but also a good friend. I remember his each and every words, actions. I was so shocked to hear the news after one hour of his death and the whole night, i was calling my friends to know all the detail of the incident. He is a good singer, craks jokes, we used to gather most fo the times during our college life. NOW this moment, i am missing him so much. i lost one of my best friend.
may his soul rest in peace. may god give strength to his family to overcome with this incident.

And i want everbody to donate how much you can from ur side. i did already. because we are sending his body to nepal as soon as we collect the money. if anyone is interested to donate you can go online and pay from paypal.

NEPALI STUDENT KILLED IN TEXAS

I am once again deeply saddened, angered, dismayed and grieved with this news that we lost one more friend; I am finding it really hard to express myself. The frequencies of such news have been ever increasing. I find it an utmost urgent that we should spread this word to the younger generation back home that this country is not a bed or roses. If possible convince them to weigh their options around in their own country. Ashok Bhattarai who is the recent victim of this burglary/shoot out is not “no body” but he is a brother of entire Nepali community who are living abroad and trying to make their ends meet. We all arrive here thinking that this is the land of opportunity and it will make us a billionaire one day but see what happened.

Now his dreams are shattered and his parents’ hopes are devasted. What happened with him hurts me and it hurts me the most because I left my country a decade ago with similar hope and dreams and I could very well have been the guy behind that counter. We all know where we come from and how hard it is for us to survive in this foreign country. Let us all pray for him together and hope that such terrible news will never hit our media again. Let’s unite to make us hear. People who have succeeded to come here before our generations and own such places like 711, motels or Gas Stations use these innocent people like Ashok and pay him below minimum wage and get their work done.

Do you think the United States government is unaware of that, should not they do something? Ever worried about illegal immigrants in this country what I believe is that the government should go behind such employers and thoroughly investigate the employer so that they will not hire another new Nepali who lands in this country with hopes to change his life.

I know a lot of debate will spur with this but what if the United States provides student loan for qualified students; just like it does for the permanent resident “Green Card Holder”. I can assure you that if we are allowed to even apply for these Federal loans then we won’t be racking up our credit card bills and hence would rather concentrate on finishing up the schools than trying to work on such cheap risky places. I know most of the people who land in this country have never done any of the work that we end up doing here and we do pick such jobs, not by choice but by compulsion of circumstances.

While the Global economy is still in a mesh don’t you think the international society invests in future of these you people? Also it would be relevant to say that 80% of students who arrive here are already highly educated and any countries that are willing to invest in their future will surely get decent returns.

What do you say? Post your views and comments at http://blog.nayanepalnews.com/
