Namaste' -

My name is Christopher and I am a volunteer with the International Rescue Committee and I am helping a refugee family from Bhutan that just arrived in the U.S in late March.  They are ethnic Nepalese and are very eager to meet people from Nepal here in the Dallas area.  Soon, I will have them register on this website to take advantage of the Nepalese community here but first wanted to post this to find out how I can connect this wonderful family with others from Nepal here.  Any thoughts and and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Christopher
Thanks for for effort and work with the refugees. It is wise that you directed them to this website and please definetly arrange a meeting with the Nepali association of Dallas, hope they will be some help. With the recent move of thousands of Nepali refugee across the world, I hope we here at Sajha (including San) can be help to them virtually from all cross the world.
I've done the same there in the West Coast. I don't know how adamantly the Dallas City's Multicultural Program is open with other race, it's a blessing here because of huge Asian Population. Surprisingly local churches have been more helpful than few temples we have here. I've volunteered with translation and small helps when ever I can with the local organizations, which I came to know through my spouse.
Good Luck

Chris:

There is also a small (and now increasing, thanks to the resettlement program) Bhutanese community in the United States. Unfortunately, no one is in Texas except for the new arrivals. Please check www.aba-usa.org for some details of the Association of Bhutanese in America, a new effort of the Bhutanese (mostly asylees and refugees) in the United States to organize themselves.

Fell free to conatct me if you need more information on the Bhutanese community in the US.

For those who are interested, here is the location that I know of where they are being resettled:

Atlanta, GA

Jacksonville, FL

Grand Rapids, MI

Syracuse, NY

Vermont and Maine (don't know exact location)

Leonia and Concord, NH

LA, CA

Spokane WA

Chicago, IL

some in NYC area, and MN, but only those who have an anchor person there

Some in the Bay Area, but I believe they will also have anchoir person(s) before they are brought in.

Hope this helps. The locations will be more varied as the number arriving increases.

Sir Christopher,

Thank you so much for helping them out. If you are ever in the New England area let us know, so we as a community can personally thank you for your generosity.

Christopher,

ANA held its annual convention in Dallas in 2005  http://www.visitnepal.com/ana2005/homepage.html.  Look up Friends of Nepal's director in Dallas.  Also, contact Nepalese Society Texas http://www.nepalesesociety.org/front/index.php

I'm not sure if they're still operating, but there is/was a weekly Nepali radio show in Dallas on 104.9 FM: http://www.everestmediausa.com/

Thanks for what you're doing.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my post.  I have contacted someone at the Nepalese Society Texas and I am going to take the Nepalese family to the Nepalese New Year 2065 B.S. Party on April 20th.  I am meeting with them tomorrow to tell them the good news.  They will be so happy to have the opportunity to meet other Nepalese in the area.

Thank you again -
