I recently accepted a verbal job offer from a company and after that they sent me the written offer package. In the mean time i got another job offer from a good company and I accepted the offer and signed the offer letter too and sent them back.

Now my Question is that do I have any problem rejecting the first offer. I researched some of the career center web sites and found that accepting verbal offer is as much strong as accepting the written offer. Now I am in dielema on how to react with this situation.

Thanks for your help.

Verbal acceptance is completely different compared to a written acceptance. You always have the right to tell the company at any times that you don't want to accept their job offer. If I  were you, I would just reject their offer and start working for a better company.  I don't think they can harm you legally in any ways. So enjoy your new job and stop worrying about the verbal acceptance drama..end of the story

I was in a similar situation not too long ago. There are very few companies that bind you to stay with them for a certain period of time, even if you have signed the contract. What it can also implicate is, they can lay you off whenever they want. So, no reason to scratch your head about this, although I just read today how "scratching helps to block unpleasant thoughts." : D

But I would advise you to be "nice" to your first employer and give a written notification that you have decided to seek opportunity elsewhere. Be grateful to them for their offer. It obviously is not so good news for your employer, but nothing makes it worse than an arrogant and a rude reply.

what you can do at the moment is write an e-mail  as soon as possible to the employer mentioning that your job interest (not monetary but the kind of work you are interested) matches well with the second company. Be thankful for the opportunity they provided for you. Be nice.. and things should be okay. And don't worry about the verbal acceptance.

Thanks all of you. Both the job are not contract position. I Salute all of your for your suggestion. With the help of you guys and my other freind  Raj, i prepared the following letter for my first employer. Hope it works.

Dear  xyz,

Thank you very much for your help and letter offering me the position of Software Engineer with  your company. While I believe firmly in the mission of your organization and appreciate the challenging opportunity you offer, I have had another offer which I believe more closely matches my current career goals and interests.
Therefore, although it was a difficult decision, I must decline your offer. I do appreciate all the courtesy and hospitality extended to me by your office, and I wish you well in your endeavors.

If I can be of any assistance, please let me know.I would be glad to help however I can.

I wish you a happy new year.
