Hi Lanthus,
It up to you to choose what flavor of Linux you want..... I besically use Redhat for my server... I've been working on redhat for 6 years ; way before fedora...
But its the support and easy to work for the workstation .i've kindda like Ubuntu.. Why don't you give it a try.... its mush faster than fedora 7 in a laptop man.....
I'm thinking now to switch my server to ubuntu.......
I wouldn't say its better than redhat or any other flavors out there but more people like it as a workstation.....

KNOPPIX, WHOPPIX, AUDITOR, HELIX, and now BACKTRACK /~2 (based on Slackware) -- I use these goodies all the time! They are currently working on BackTrack3, and should be coming out soon. All these Linux flavors come loaded with Security & Non-Security utilities; I usually don't get the feel on raw distros, and don't use them unless there is a requirement -- such as in the production environment.

For those who aren't familiar with these live bootables; they have the ability to run on your machines with/without installing the OS on your local hard drive. They can also run on a vmware and similar virutal environments!

cheers,

~@~

I am loving Ubuntu thesedays. Haven't tried BackTrack, hope to use it during this weekend. Seems cool though.
* I prefer Redhat for production environment*

Hey what's up!!!!!!!
This thread came back after such a longgggggg longggg time... Woww!!!!
Great to see all the Open Source enthusiast

Hey you know what now you can install Ubuntu 7.10 from your Windows . Now everyone can give it a try, if you don't like just remove it from add/remove util.

One thing is for sure we are here to stay and support Linux...and Open source...

There is something in Ubuntu that keeps pulling me back.... but i'm supporting Redhat , Suse and Solaris for the production side.......

ya i tried the ubuntu from windows and also ubuntu on different partiition...

my experience is that both have similar speed...

the only major difference maybe reliability.. i think ubuntu in windows install is little lesss reliable if your power goes off or something like that.

for ubuntu.. goto www.ubuntu.com and download from there... very easy.. just follow directions.

hey u linux geeks

i have a Question on Dual BOOT.

i made partition and installed windows xp and ubuntu

now when i turn on my computer it brings up Boot menu asking what OS i want... and the option is by default set to Ubuntu.... i have to choose within 30 seconds if i dont do anything it loads Ubuntu.

Now i want to change that default option to Windows XP.

how do do that ?   it seems i cant do that change from Windows.. i think it has something to do with Ubuntu and maybe some setting in the grub.

plz suggest.. i have been stuck in this problem for quite a while.

-LB

latoboy,
I think you have to edit the menu.lst file. Make sure you backed up menu.lst before editing it.

gksudo vi /boot/grub/menu.lst

Change the 'default 0' which is pointing to Ubuntu to 'default 1' which is pointing to xp.

please refer to the following link

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto/ChangeDefaultOS

I prefer virtual box to the dual boot. It's almost a pain in the ass setting up network in vb, but when it's done, it works as a charm. I have never seen windows running that fast and it's way better than using 'parallels' to run xp in OS X.

.Guys, please recommend the best distribution of linux for me:

DELL, Intel Pentium 500MHZ, 128MB, 3+3=6GB HDD, CD-ROM, Zip and floppy drive, 2 slow USB ports. Don't want to throw it, also because it has great sound adaptor

Now it runs OK with XP home, with basic softwares, just to run internet, email, music and movies.

I want to try Linux. Please suggest which distribution is the best, prefarably the one that's easier for windows user.

Thanks

_

ubuntu is the most popular distro .. u can try installing on your computer but i think it will be very slow.

so u may want to try a smaller less power hungry distro

I read about Kbuntu 8.*.. but it requires more powerful machine. I am looking for smaller or rather an earlier version. I just need it for basic use home computer.
