Cleo - Very nice! Gayatri early in the morning - got religion there, eh? :)

Crystal Cracker- I have become a big fan of Pandit Jasraj over the years. He is one incredible musician.

Pacifier - Nice going there with Hussain and Pearl Jam.

Raaga Bhairavi

The concluding item of a live concert in the Hungarian Cultural Centre (New-Delhi), Shankara Orchestra plays Raag Bhairavi. Musicians from left to right are Nawab Khan (tabla), Romain Loyer (sitar - France), Shailendra Janardan(violin), Rajeev Janardan (sitar), Dr. Kamala Shankar (shankar-guitar), Tóth Szabi (sitar - Hungary).

I never get tired of Nusrat Fateh Ali and Pt. Jasraj. Their music is divine,.
I was looking for the Pearl Jam one.

Thanks captain, and all of you for initiating and contributing to the post.

Capt mitey,
The Ravi Shankar piece is marvellous - not very familiar with his work.

His daughter also a world famous Sitar player, no? I must have read elsewhere.

His daughter is Norah Jones. She is a great player too, and I have seen her concerts playing with her dad.

Hey SL -

That's correct Norah Jones is one of his daughters (as CC pointed out) and Anoushka is the other. Anoushka is a talented Sitar player. She has played along side with her dad too.

SNDY - Nice choice there.

Here's Anoushka at the"Concert for George" (Harrison I presume?)

Captain,
LOL! this thread is so totally like you. D (:P) ...

i mean,
((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((YAWN)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

hahahaha...just kidding. :-). my mom is into classical and i have heard some of the raagas. it does make me feel divine :-)

i am not too much into classical myself, but i do know that some of the movie songs are based solely upon a particular raga. let me take some examples:

First listen to this raag:

Raag Darbari by Pandit Jasraj

Now listen to this song:

Toote Hue Khaabon Ne --Madhumati (it's based on Raag Darbari)

Raag Aiman

Chandan sa badan -- Sarswati Chandra based on Raag Aiman

Ha ha ha Loots! In the same spirit, is it really "yawn" or more like "blush" ( too embarassed to admit that you could even remotely like something so "yawny") ... he he

Oh BTW, for someone not "too much into classical", those are pretty nice numbers you put out there :)

These days I personally like classical music with a slightly faster tempo (but it keeps changing every now and then :P). Especially some of the faster tempo tabla work of people like Zhakir Hussain and the works of Taufiq. Cant seem to find any such ones on YouTube right now.

But here is Zakir Hussain on a "tabla orgy" (as per the comment on youtube). The video is almost 10 mins and it gets progressively better as the performance builds up:
