By not trying... :-) If you read carefully, it's written that by re-taking GMAT, you may not be able to improve substantially, just a few times... but it doesn't mean that you keep on re-taking th etest, and the increments would accumulate. Don't get cheated.... why to waste money.

I took the GMAT about a year ago, and did pretty well. Here are some tips:
1. I mostly studied from "Cracking the GMAT" - Princeton Review.
2. I also bought the ETS official guide to GMAT. You should be able to buy both of these books on ebay. It is dirt cheap in there.
3. I googled "gmat practice" and took several free tests online.
4. I made a log of all the difficult questions that I encountered for both math and verbal and would periodically try to do them.
5. The biggest secret to doing well is no secret - Practice, practice, practice. However, don't just take tests for the sake of it. Remember to go back and revise the questions once you are done with the test and try to understand the explanation very well.

Good luck!

I did not get 700, but close to 700. It was CAT and I could not manage 1-2 math questions.

My strategy was to hit 100 % in math section and doing strong in verbal.

Thanks

it's not so hard to believe, prem_dai. most (actually all) of the ppl i know who took the gmat scored above 700. in fact, given that it's getting more and more competitive to get into good b-schools, you can't get in to a top program scorign 650 or less. i know someone who got into the stanford gsb with a 500+, but she had a 4.9/5.0 gpa at mit so that was an exception.
rosie's suggestion is the best. as they say, practice makes perfect. i would also recommend Kaplan. it's got pretty good training sections that you can use to improve on specific areas. i had kaplan, princeton review, ets and barron. i found kaplan to be the best for training. i always got below 700 during practice, so the kaplan's score is not a good indicator of actual performance. the ets tests, which you can download for free, are pretty good indicators. you should definitely do them as you approach the deadline. and i hate to generalize, but most nepalese folks i know are not good time managers (but are pretty good at crisis-management). so start early, and practice regularly. happy studyin'
