Man like Mahendra

What sets Mahendra Man Shakya apart, in his own words, is his ability to see hope when things are bad. And that is a talent all of us could do with.

Honda Man (his high school name has stuck into adulthood) likes to think of himself as a social entrepreneur rather than a businessman. Moving into his family business, Mahendra Man discovered he had a knack for picking winners. When he went to Delhi to buy light fixtures for his home, he ended up in partnership with the dealer who agreed to supply not just his residence but the whole of Kathmandu. The familys light fixture showroom was the first of its kind in the Valley.

It wasnt until Mahendra Man landed in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1987 to work as an international youth counsellor in a Native American reservation that he realised money wasnt everything. In the West, we are overwhelmed by the material aspect of life, but I realised there, in the middle of North America, it takes more than money to be happy, he recalls. Later in Boston, Mahendra Man took night school classes in economics, finance and accounting, and worked different jobs during the day.

The Nepali population in Boston hovered around 1,500, a number large enough to warrant an annual Dasain party. In 1992, Honda Man was elected president of the Greater Boston Nepali Community, but he was uncomfortable with the thought of making America home. I believed a middle-class man like me would get better opportunities, dignity and recognition in Nepal, he explains.

Returning to Nepal, Mahendra Man spent four years and two terms as the president of the Godavari Alumni Association (GAA), rejuvenating one of the oldest social service organisations in the country. When his term ends this week, Rajeev Pradhan and Ashutosh Tiwari are standing as candidates for president in elections on Saturday. It has been a rewarding experience, says Mahendra Man of his tenure at GAA. He now plans to spend more time playing and organising basketball tournaments. As secretary of the Nepal Basketball Association, Mahendra Man hopes to work the same magic he did for GAA.

He also hopes to devote more time to his pet venture, Momo King, a fast food chain that specialises in hygienic and healthy momos. With the success of the restaurant, Honda Man now has a new nickname: Momo King. (Written by Alok Tumbahangphey)

Not to mean sarcastic, but,

"With the success of the restaurant, Honda Man now has a new nickname: Momo King."

whether this statement is true or Mr. Tumbahamnphay is Mr. Momo King's friend. Well,
I was told by someone from St. Xavier (a GAA Member) alumni that Momo King was
initiallly very famous, but, later Mr. Honda Shakya now Momo King has to close
his "some" momo boxes out of Momo King chain. Well, I wish the article writer
Mr. Alok is not directly related to GAA, nor a close friend of Honda, otherwise
some friends here joke that whether the article is a paid advertisement ?

You are welcome to disagree.

Dear GP,

I find you spot on in your analysis if the said Honda Man has discreetly paid for infotainment (information + entertainment). This is a highly manipulative way of public relation exercise to link his business with a cause. It is termed Cause Marketing. One has to beg the question of the e-poster of this item in this thread if he is the chosen one by the said Honda Man.

Then again, I find an article by daniel Goleman in harvard business Review March-April 2000 that had the article "Leadership That Gets Results."

In summary the article outlines that one should ask any group of businesspeople the question "What do effective leaders do?" and you'll hear a sweep of answers. Leaders set strategy; they motivate; they create a mission; they build a culture. Then ask "What should leaders do?" If the group is seasoned, you'll like hear one response: the leader's singular job is to get ressults.

But how? The mystery of what leaders can and ought to do in order to spark the best perfromance form their people is age-old. Inrecent years, that mystery has spawned an entire cottage industry: literally thousands of "leadership experts"have made careers of testing and coaching executives, all in pursuit of creating businesspeople who can turn bold objectives-be they strategic, financial, organisational, or all three-into reality.

Still, effective leadership eludes many people and organizations. One reason is that until recently, virtually no quantitive research has demonstrated which precise leadership yeild positive results. leadership experts proffer advice based on inference, experience, and instinct. Sometimes that advice is right on target; sometimes it's not.

But new research by the consulting firm hay/McBer, which draws on a random sample of 3871 executives selected from a database of more than 20000 executives worldwide, takes much mystery out of effective leadership. The research found six distinct leadership styles, each springing from different components of emotional intelligence.

I will write more on the six styles of leadership. They are Coercive leaders and they demand immidiate compliance. Authoritative leaders mobilize people toward a vision. Affiliative leers create emotional bonds and harmony. Democratic leaders build consensus through participation. Pacesetting leaders develop excellence and self-direction. And coaching leaders develop people for future.

The questions then arises what kind of leader was Honda Man? What kind of leader is this chosen one going to be from the blessing of the said Honda Man?

GP-ji,

I don't think that the mini-profile was/is a paid advertisement.
Let's not be so cynical, yet.

There are many people in Nepal who are doing or trying to do some good work here
and there.

Sure, they may not be perfect human beings, but at least they are making an effort in their own small, small ways. If a newspaper features some of these Nepalis in its reports from time to time, there's no harm to the rest of the society, or is there?

Who knows, someday your turn to be featured might just come.

What if these features are BLOATED like this one specially about "Momo King"?

Some Ideologist forget their ideology just like the politicians. If the mud is slung at them its bad, if its thrown at their enenmies its good.

This nepalitara character is kinda whackish but something he posted caught my eye. I wonder how true it was "Rajeevji Godavari Alumini Association ka future Neta hun ani chanjo kura ma OOHI ASHUJI ka opponent. There is a Presidential election coming where both are horse racing and trading Presidential candidates. OOHIji is backed up by HONDA MAN or former El Presidente of GAA through paid and hidden and secretice advertorial in baje Kanak and Kunda daju bahi papers like Nepali Times. "

Saroj,

Not true at all.

I have been posting news about OTHER Nepalis' accomplishments on Sajha for four years now. So, this posting above about Mahendra is NOTHING new for me.

Nepaltara aka Ebaje aka Ranjta Rana is the SAME person who had been thrown out
of Sajha from before for khatttam conduct.

He has own issues to work out for himself. I have never met him, nor have done anything to him, but -- because of our disagreements on a couple of discussions in the past -- he continues to carry some deep animosity toward me. And I am not the only one against whom he spews forth his venom in public.

I wish him well.

You think that I am that I am. It reminds me of Dantya Katha with ka desh ma with the start and sunelai sunko mala and so forth and so on and blah blah blah....

By the way I have not gone to Swarga yet and the never ending story has not finito mushikat yet....

You remind me of Chatur Shyal trying to get inside a dead and rotting elephant (GAA). But some how Shiva the God of Destruction was inside this Kuire Kuheko Seto Hati. Chatur Shyal wanted to get inside to devour the rooting entrails as he was ver very (power) hungry. He tried to scrtach here and there and could not get indise the closed bum or anus of the said Hati (Maha lumpasar maha kuieko maha gaja Pachderm gangetica mortido). Shyal heard something inside doing dum maro dum or mitta jai gum aur doing bolo subha sam....

Shyal: "Who is inside?"

Voice from inside the Seto Murda Maha Hati: "Me"

Such conversation went for a while without the Shyal really getting satisfactory answer.

In the next round the answer from inside came out as that he is that he is.

By this time Shivaji was totally stoned and was getting bored with the questions from the outside. This time Shivaji felt sorry for the Shyal and innocently told him that he was that who he was. He had to do after he realized that Shyal is actually his consorts GANA.

The Chatur Shyal seized the opportunity and challenged Shiva to make rain in order to get verification that he is who he claimed to be.

So it rained and as it rained the Maha Seto Kuieko Hati's chak oped up and Shiva come out....as this occured the Chatur Shyal got inside the Kuieko Seto Murda Maha Hati. For a fun Shivaji stopped the rained and the Chatur Jackal aka Cayote Ugly got stuck inside it till the mercy of Lord Shiva fell in the said Shyal.

Well, Oohiji that is how you may ever dream of getting inside GAA nest time around.

In the mean time dream a lot like Som Nath Sharma dreamed of building acstle in the thin air without proper foundation.

I do not hate you and do not need to harm you.

Go and get a life dude.
