With disheveled hair, ruffled tie, wrinkled and wet school uniform exhibiting rebellion and youthful exuberancewe waited by the stationary in Ganesthan waiting for the rain to subside. It had been a long day at school. Vehicles skidded on the road splashing mud and water indifferently to the helpless pedestrians. Streets flooded bringing the pungent smell of sewage for the lack of proper drainage. Monsoon consequences were inevitable in Kathmandu in summer.

Oyss! Pani rokela jasto chaina. Chiya khana jaam ? Suraj proposed and I readily concurred. The smell of freshly fried samosas and chops were too hard to resist. We killed time over the hearty meal talking about mundane stuff. Suraj was such a good company. It was his last year at school. It would be lonesome in the busstop from next year. J hoss! Ramailo bhanya school life mai garnu parcha he would say once in a while. He became my instant role model when I saw him once , light a ciggie by short circuiting which had absolutely fascinated me.

As we got out of the bhojanalaya rain had subsided limiting itself to a teasing drizzle. By the time we got to gahana pokhari, clouds roared once more. Rain began to beat down us. Usually wed run for cover, but Suraj trotted lazily saying Hyaa! Bholi sukrabar ta ho ni. The very thought of Friday gave such ample relief in weekdays. I agreed with him looking up in the sky enjoying the showerly blessings. It did feel good once in a while to get totally drenched.

******
La hera My mom greeted me at the door pheri nitrukka bhijera aayecha. Yesari pani ma bhijis bhane ta birami hudainas? My mom made a reasonable argument.

Bholi sukrabar ta ho ni was my weak reply. la la! Chado luga ferera khaja khana aaija. She gave me a quizzical look after I told that I had already eaten. jaha payo tyehi nakha bhaneko hoina. Garmi ma jhada banta lage pachi matrai chetchas taile she sighed. la ja luga ferr ta chado. Ma chiya leidinchu."

Sipping warm cup of tea of mechi special and a creamy donut from Krishna pauroti breathed a new life onto me. After aimless thoughts for a while, reluctantly, I reached for my 20 kg school bag. There was tons of tedious hw due the next day. Hyaa Friday pani hw I said to myself as if Friday were not a schoolday.

Saprasanga Byakhya gara! I read aloud and got an instant headache. I was in no mood to write though I loved writing Nepali more than anything at the time. Suddenly, the lights went out and the neighbors cheered loadshedding

AHH! I perked up. Aaja loadshedding po I stayed in the dark sipping my tea wondering where to start. My sisters stamped down the stairs to claim the only emergency light we had nextdoor. I hated using it. I was always a candle light person. :)
I reached for my little portable FM radio which maami had won in a pack of everest toothpaste. FM had made waves in Kathmandu especially to the teens since its recent induction. Bon jovis always was playing. Suddenly I wanted to do trigonometry. I wonder why maths and music blend together so well.

....contd.

Oys,
I'm beginning to liken your Shivani to DuMaurier's Rebecca. Seriously, Shivani does not speak or really have an active role in any of your compositions, and yet she seems to provoke your readers' curiosity the most.

As for me, my favorite character in your stories is your mami. She seems really kind and loving and so simple that you cannot help but fall in love with her. She reminds me a lot of my mami.

Thanx everyone. Was very interesting to read all your comments. Its titillating to know many share similar experiences one way or the other. don't get to use computer much these days, so pako bela lekhi halum....

Wateva, last year matra ghar gaako hoina? aba ta mero turn ho, don't u think so? :P

Lizardking bro, chiyapasal chadeko chaina..tara can't listen to those songs in the computer here, hence jus skim through it. Sauji le j hoss babal pragati garya ho. Shivani west ma bhako bhaye ta bhai halthyo ni....if she were chinese especially!

Rosie jyu, your support is always appreciated. Shivani doesn't have a great role cause, my interaction with her was more at a sub conscious level than through actual conversations. Alas! I regret it sometimes. I try to avoid her sometimes in the stories, but then there are few who requested that i am to put her in my story somehow..especially my sister :)

Mindgames, really appreciate your comment. Interestingly, among many common things we share, mero sanu sathi was one of my fav. stories at school. As far as being legend is concerned, only pink floyd is legend to me. Quoting you from other day of that talking song "It doesn't have to end up like this. All you need to do is make sure you keep talking" :)

Angel and sparsha thank you!

Dananah! of course, no can beat you in becoming devdas in sajah these days ;). Sometimes there are thousands of better memories of childhood floating in my mind. I wish at those moments, i had a computer in front of me so that icould type it immediately. but alas! things are different now. As for your nepali lessons, u r doing well. i remember a friend who learnt to speak nepali merely by going to a chatroom :)

meera jyu, I hope i have corrected you by now. yet i choose not to give a "yes" or "no" of her existence as FBI would term it better as "witness protection program" AHEM!

Princeofdarkness, south, sense, redstone (fag:P), n_B, goodkillas, doc bee! glad you enjoyed it. n thanx for your endearing comments.

TMA bro, Since you had started a thread few months back requesting for a memory lane, i hope i didn't disappoint you this ttime. :) your support is always appreciated. Hopefully, sometime around next year, we can meet down under (if u r in sydney) and recollect some other wonderful memories.

Sitara jyu, u make me jealous, but nevertheless enjoy your stay in ktm.

haha Deep bro, sound ta thyakkai milcha. those sound of pipes and cymbal, arent' those mesmerizing. There isn't a greater source of inspiration writing these memories than your own stories revolving around the area deep bro. so u do keep writing.

oops rauniyar ji ta jhandai chutya! aren't you in cT? aaba chai bhet ghat garum hai...middletown teera ta hoina? ma chai ali mathi east teera chu :)

loo back to wooork!

meera,
Yes, Shivani is figment of his imagination and whenever he dreams about shivani he gets rainfall at night (or nightfall to be precise), if you know what I mean...:p

Oys bro having monsoon dreams, rainfalls in dreams? Don't worry bro, That's pretty normal. It's just a part of growing up. You will get over it.

lol @ danggg.

Rosie as part of your query, I think every one of us dream about 'Shivani' , Shivani comes in varieties.Of course, oys's Shivani is peculiar because he is so sticked with the name. In fact, his memory lane without Shivani is noon navayeko tarkari barabari. Rosie, you must also have some Mr. X making you smile in your delightful thought, caught you? j/k

Bro Shivani pani chaina rye , chiyapasal pani jana napaunye, chinese arye, kina teha basirako ta, ;) LA ko safar kasto vayo ta comfy bro?

Hus ta jai hawos sabaiko

Told u, dude is good.

Oys, if you haven't already done so, do go through some of the works by Charles Schulz (Peanuts). His character development is considered the best in any cartoon strips and I could relate few of your characters development to his own old gang of Peanuts (good old Charlie Brown, Lucy, Snoopy, Schroeder etc).

The way you have developed your characters; yourself, your mammu and sister and ofcourse Shivani, is really admirable.

If u ask me honestly, I think there is a lot of truth to the character Shivani (compared to the RED haired girl in Peanuts). Oys sure liked the girl.

Dang! Danggg, you sure it's not a pigment of his imagination?! We do tend to color, shade and shine much when we look through rosy-hued glasses of teenage years, not to mention raging hormones! :P

Hey hey DWI!

Rauniyar ji, Thanks for asking! Nepal couldn't be treating me better. The hustle and bustle of daily life brings back memories. KTM seems suspended in time, only the people change (mind you not the politicians!!!).

Anyways keep up your writing? One fine day "Shivani" ji will be a popular character, if you follow your current way of writing. I trust that!

Sitaraji,

aa ho sora aana satya bhannu bha-you - on people change but Kathmandu is suspended in time. Any plans of hitting out outside the city? Like writing something on a family sitting outside the "Chapro" and/or tyo dada ma baji rakehko one and the only Radio Nepal. Give us something interesting. Please!

LizardKing, you got me there. Back in the day, I also had a figment (or pigment lol) of my imagination. And, that was the name I most frequently used when writing stories for creative writing classes, etc. in highschool. I am chuckling right now, as I remember the name. It was S*** Gosh! how chilldish...
Surprising how most of the names of these imaginary princes or princesses usually begin with the letter "S." Maybe, it is just the whispery sound of the alphabet -SSSSSSS

Star ji,

tyasho bhai-ee you might just bring your new camera to use. In a way it will mitigate the writer's clog.

Ani, are you meeting and treating Sajhaites down there by any chance?
