There is always a paradoxical truth in the samsara that is founded on duality. Nothing in the physical world is meant to give satisfaction and peace. Hence humanity runs after things all their lives and dies with unfulfilled desires. Nepalis have also had a desire to have a prosperous nation for the past 70 years, after throwing the autocratic Rana regime. Now, 70 years later, they are crushingly saddled with an authoritarian Communist rule. You can easily surmise that Nepalis are not a bright lot. However, there is something that Nepalese are probably world champion in. Don’t be surprised or start calling your friend and family to share the news or write a status on social media to share the good news. It is not at all good.

The biggest fact about Nepal is that it is a rich country in many ways, but economically, it is one of the poorest places. That is why the leaders sell a vision of making Nepal into Singapore and instead make it “Jhingapur.” It is a common joke in our circle. Then some claim to make Nepal into Switzerland, and my personal take is that they are only good to make it into Swaziland. No disrespect to Swaziland. So, why all this? What is this thing about Nepalis being world champion in?

From my last 12 years of observation, I have concluded that Nepalis are world champions in “wasting resources.” Nepal is full of potential. It has all these resources in culture, biodiversity, natural wealth, and even ancient treasure trove in original knowledge of the universe. But despite this face, and many scholars visiting Nepal pointing this fact out, Nepalis do not see this wealth present right here. The grass here is dead because no one is watering it. Everyone is busy seeing the green grass on the other side of the fence and choose the easy route, the wrong route.

The truth is that despite the wealth of resources, the most important resource is missing. That is the human resource. Since the Nepalis have been cheated out of good, critical thinking, creative citizens coming out of its education system, all they can think of is finding a job, and work for others rather than launch entrepreneurial ventures. The U.K was the country of shoppers, and the US is a country of entrepreneurs and so they create opportunities in their own land and get others to enslave for them.

One good example is Singapore, the ideal country in Asia. This tiny island nation has the most competent manpower so even the biggest corporations establish their base in this land. Singapore has the highest PPP capability in the world, and enjoy a lifestyle higher than the West. If Nepal had such manpower, just the water resources, or snow resource, or even the cultural resource alone would make it into one of the richest nations in the world. Singapore has nothing given by God, so they have had to create on their own marvelous creations one after the next.

This example of Nepalese waste habit is on display on many fronts. One simple example will suffice to prove my point. One true to life example is how Nepalis spend their remittance. There is plenty of news I have read that gave such data. When their family members toil their sweat and blood abroad and send some remittance home, the money is mostly spent on purchasing consumer goods and clothes. There is no program or policy to channel them to productive use to promote entrepreneurship and generate higher income.

An additional example is more on a personal level. You might have seen it all too often on social media. You will see people soliciting funds to cure some illnesses. I have seen so many posts asking for funds to cure a 5-year-old with cancer, or 10-year-old needing heart-operation. Guess what? Many people do feel sorry for them and part with the money in the name of helping the poor in times of distress. Or, there will be some adults facing a severe medical crisis and needing serious money to pay the medical bill. One such call is going on right now, this very instant, for a friend who had a heart operation.

The main issue with these solicitations is this. What real chance do these children with heart problems or facing cancer death have to survive and contribute to society when they grow up? Since they are living in such dire poverty, what exactly is their chances of even surviving, being educated well, or giving back to society, rather than one more person struggling throughout life? And the adults who suddenly fall sick, what kind of lives did they live? Was it not a life of abuse, struggle, and bad habits like addiction to various things?

Take the example of the current PM. His close friend has revealed in many YouTube interviews that he used to be addicted to smoke and alcohol. He was so poor that he used to make last a single stick of cigarette last three times. He could not function without a puff. In the evening, alcohol was a must. When such a person becomes the most powerful person of a country through a quirk of fate, or a joke destiny has played on Nepalis, what exactly are we expecting? Will he not enrich himself with everything he can get away with? Did his kidney problem arise out of his sacrifice for the nation or from his personal addictions? And why do Nepalis have to foot the bill for his personal ailment arising from his personal mediocre life before?

Instead, if that money was allocated to someone like Mahabir Pun, or other bright people with innovative ideas, imagine how many people could be helped, how our society would actually learn to stand on its feet and never have to beg. So yes, I see it every day, how Nepalis waste their money and worse still their time on the worthless pursuit.

Hence, I have concluded, Nepal is poor because its people practice poor resource management, and waste all the good opportunities around them. Nepalis are really the world champ here.

My friend Nepal is poor because maybe Nepalese only see negatives in everything. One example is this article . Like there is two sides to every coin, there are negatives and positives. You can't just choose to see negatives without looking at positives. You can't only see negatives in Oli. Oli went to jail for 14 years for social equality. Not only that he did a intercaste marriage. Many of my friends are still scared to date girls from different caste because they are scared of their parents. And, now he is leading the fight with the much bigger country India. You don't have like his policies as PM, but don't over look his sacrifices. Walking the talk is hard.

I would recommend you to weigh things from at least two perspectives. You can always make your point, but acknowledge the other point also. Keep up the good work !
