I was thinking of doing the same. I even worked for a small solar startup here in US but due to my personal financial concerns i wasn't able to take that to nepal, i left for a corporate. My long term goal is to invest in nepal. I tried convincing many of my friends but nobody gives a damn. we are Nepalis and we shouldn't be so scared to invest in our homeland. Challenges are high but man thats our land and i think we can do it.
what sector/Business you wanna invest in? Whats your background and when do you think you want to atleast start taking looking at starting ?

I would be concerned about being able to pull my money out when I need it. I have heard of too many people who have difficulty getting their own money out of Nepal.

I'm also interested in this topic. I would like to do good in my native land. However, due to the lack of experience, I'm seeking more information.

Bhisan - Hello, my brother works in real estate field, it seems like investing in real estate is like buying gold in terms of security. However, if you are just going to buy it and not utilize it then with the land prices already high in Kathmandu, it won't be such a smart move in terms of return on investment on the short term. You can invest in land maybe outside of the high price area in kathmandu and rent or open like a resort or agro or some other business, since land prices would be relatively cheaper.
If you are really interested, you can PM me and perhaps I can give you more info.

I've got many idea.....but my biggest turn off is the paper work and their inability to streamline process. I went back to nepal 2 years back and i got to personally experience how things are done in the high level. there is no time line, no guide line, no responsibility. It's like they have this attitude that they will get to it when they feel like it. there is no sense of urgency.
I get so frustrated something.....i mean there is so much things we can take back to nepal that've learned from being aboard...but maaannnn...when they can't or don't have the simple things in place to make it friendly for investor it's really frustrating. Unless you have millions to bride the official or have family member in high position...it's unappealing or nearly impossible.

things are easier said than done- literally- when it comes to Nepal. Bank line ko minimum waiting time is about and hr or so..it is indeed very frustrating

the thing is, be it any startup- nepal ma people lai convince garna garho cha, no one is ever interested in something, and if someone starts doing something and it seems to work for them, aru sab le tyahi garcha.. eg. restaurant business here in nepal- sab le kholeko dekcha, the the number keeps increasing over years making the market more competitive, cause sab kura is either over ktm or pkr... if your execution isn't as good as others then you my just lose your business over someone who just started theirs

Solar panels i believe is done by gham pani - a company, and there are few others in line following their footsteps, but the thing is , people do one want to install solar panels, the challenging parts isn't about friendly competition among companies but having to convince people to install them..

if anyone wants to do smth go for it, nepal ma scope tannai cha for new ideas and it might just work but with the limited population, and the crowd that acts like sheeps here, its just to darn difficult!

I think realestate is the safest gold mine in nepal if you have some good capital. I hear import / export is hot too. But then pulling money out of nepal is probably the hardest part and rightfully so ..if that's what everyone did we would gut the economy back home.

Personally I would like to get into farming livestocks.

I have invested in hydropower and banks. I started 4 years ago and my total value is 3 times of my investment.

@ Paradox - I've thought of this hydro but never banks. How do you know if the investing firm is reputable? have you taken "cashed out" or are you just re-investing? I see a lot people having concern about pulling money out. Also by investment...what i was really getting at is starting a legitimate, professional company with a sound SOP that are in direct contact with the people of nepal.
Hypothetically speaking - instead of investment firm managing all the hydro company....i wanna start and own the hydro company; instead of a investment firm managing all momo restaurant.....I wanna start my own momo restaurant.
Sorry if i wasn't clear.....but hopefully you catch my drift.

my cousin runs a transport company which collects bio veggies and fruits from central and eastern nepal and transports it to calcutta(and since the last 3 months to delhi as well). he is making loads of money by basically investing in 4 trucks and 10 workers initially. now he has clients in delhi and calcuttas hotels, supermarkets and groceries in high end residential areas.
he started this back in 2009 in ktm and it was an instant success. he basically bought the fruits and veggies from surrounding districts and supplied to hotels, resturants and even embassies.simple as but he is now opening chain of meat processing units in major cities of terai to supply meat to india.

Hydro hotel banking real estate shares are hot now. It good to invest now. Investing in business in US has very low return.
