Looking into muncha and it says there's no fee for limited time. However, I was curious if a US bank charges fee to you for the transfer, typically like $50 per transaction, for wire transfer.
Anyone has experience?

@ramas: yes there is a transaction fee for wire transfer. muncha is a good medium to transfer funds and its very secure and reliable. Its been two years with them.

Rule of thumb is if you are sending more than 5000 then wire transfer may be beneficial to you as you pay upfront $45 transfer fee but you get the exchange rate as current nrb.org.np rate but if you are sending let's say only 1K then use third party agent like muncha.com, thamelremit etc. Both muncha.com and thamelremit are secure and reliable. I have used both of them. Only downside is you will get less exchange rate than current exchange rate. Thamelremit actually guarantees better exchange rate than western union and moneygram. Good luck!

If you transfer through bank, you will lose almost 5 - 6 rupees per dollar. On top of that you have to pay around 45 dollars transfer fee. It's a huge difference. I personally have lost a huge amount of money on ATM withdrawal and bank transfer while in Nepal. Go with muncha.

@mancini. some of the guys here in sajha suggested that, if you are transfering some big amount its good to choose bank transfer. U will be charged $45 for any size of amount. but what you should remember is tranfer the money in dollars, don't let US bank exchange dollars to Rs here coz the xchange rate will be low. so transfer the amount in dollars to nepal and u will get the money at current Nepal Rastra Banks exact exchange rate from nepali bank there n that will make huge difference for bigger sum.

Thank you for clarifying.

Another question is that if you are sending money to a bank in Kathmandu, a bank there will ask you to transfer money to their branch (affiliated bank like Standard Chartered bank) in the US. So does the wire transfer then become domestic (typically bank fee is $20) or international (bank fee is about $50)? kinda confusing!

Can you transfer money directly to a bank in Kathmandu without the middle bank?
