Can a person with corrected vision become a commercial pilot? Is there any limit on the power of lenses? US military doesn't allow corrected vision but what about commercial pilot?

A pilot steers his aircraft like God steers the universe. Can God still see if his vision is less than 20/20? Is that even possible?
Is our external vision intertwined with our internal one? Is fixing a pilot's myopia a cure for his internal vision? Should he be fully trusted with corrected vision?
A dog got up early and ate a cat's milk. Was this intentional? Did the car suffer from vision loss like the pilot?

First of all you need to be clear about "corrected vision". Is it correction by means of glasses, PRK, LASIK or other methods?

Even the military allows pilots with glasses to a certain extent. Whats the worst correction the military will take? Well, honestly I do not know the answer. You will have to ask a military recruiter or somebody at Fork Rucker, Alabama.

Let me point out that to become a pilot with the military is very competitive. Average joe cannnot hack it. Also the age restrictions are there too. For Air Force, it is 28. Army accepts older folks but I believe Navy and Marines standards regarding age is pretty much similar to the Air Force.
One pre requisite to becoming a pilot is being citizen of the US. So, one has to have become a citizen prior to applying.

In short, you will have no problem in training and gaining employment in the US with corrected vision through any means but there are many countries around the world that will not accept LASIK, PRK for pilots. Glasses are accepted worldwide for commercial pilots.

Ask away if you have any other questions

@Kaji Sahab, thank you for your comments. Is there any limits for the power of glasses for the commercial pilots? For example, if a person has myopic eye and he wears a glass with a prescription of -6.50 for his lenses, will he still qualify for becoming pilot? Also, is there any age restrictions? Thank you once again.

Honestly speaking, I do not know if -6.50 would have any problems with FAA. FAA is very open and liberal unlike CAAN (Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal). Anyone can train and obtain a pilot's license in the US regardless of his background while CAAN dictates that one has to have been a student of science with major in Physics in high school to train and be licensed as a pilot.

Your best answer source for the first question you asked would be an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). Pilots need to be in good health to continue their jobs. A commercial pilot has to pass medical test once every year and twice every year as he gets older. Remember that I have said "good health" and not "good physique". One needs to be physically fit inside much more than outside. You can have a six pack but if you have very high cholesterol and diabetes then you probably will not pass the annual physical and not allowed to fly until the problem is taken care of since you will be responsible for hundreds of lives directly as a part of your job.

So, find an AME and get a First class medical before you even think of flying commercially because you will be required to hold a first class medical and keep it to fly commercially. It is not very expensive to get the first class medical from AME before you make that move to train investing 50k plus. Also, you will know from the medical report where you stand in terms of your health and if you have any hidden abnormalities.

There is no age restriction to become a pilot in the US, however, the mandatory retirement age is 65.If you are over 35, I would not suggest being a commercial pilot as you will make huge investment in your career and by the time you even start making good money, you will have to retire.

There are many things to consider before becoming a pilot. There are many things that will affect your career. I am solely writing this from a perspective of the US. There are things that you have to know before you take the plunge and there are things that affect your career like your legal status in the US, your income right now, your desire to get paid 18k a year after investing 50k plus in training.

Aviation is very complex in the US and elsewhere alike. So before I give our irrelevant information and cause boredom to people, tell us your background, your legal status, why you want to be a pilot and what is it that you want to achieve in your career as a pilot.

Also, pilots in the US are paid peanuts-at least for number of years starting out after cashing out 50k plus for initial training.

@ Kaji Sahab.... Thank you for your response. I am seeking information because one of my friends from Nepal is coming to US as a permanent resident (got dv) and he wants to study Aviation after he comes here. He was asking all these question to me and I have no idea about aviation. He is 30 years I guess. I should probably tell him better choose something else. I saw your videos as well. Becoming a pilot seems horrible!

@kiddo...Thank you for your link.

He is better off not becoming a pilot in the US if he intends to live in the US as a pilot. However, if he wants to get his training here, work for a few years and get experience and settle down in Nepal then its not a bad choice. However, pilots (captains) make about 5 Lakh per month with domestic airlines and co-pilots start around 60k per month in Nepal.

there will be a lot of things to take care of after he lands here so its going to be pretty difficult to spend 50k plus on training and then poverty wages after that. So my suggestion would be not to be a pilot.
