Hello everyone,

I am going to Nepal for some personal reasons and thought to get the new Passport as well. My passport is expiring in less than 6 months. I contacted embassy in DC and they said it will take more than 3 months to do it here where as it could be easily renewed in Nepal within a week.

Anyone has any similar experiences? Does anyone foresee anything that could possibly go wrong? Any suggestions will be highly appreciated!

Cheers,
Prem

If you're not sure, just get a temporary passport. Talk to DC people, they should be able to help you out.

where u from in nepal? if not from ktm then taking temp pp but doing here seems better options due to following reasons:

1. while applying in district, even you filled as shown by nepal gov site, they point out lots of filling issue such as wrongly filled form, photo not correct etc ( site itself is incorrect, there is one more file needed at back of form which is not shown here... http://dopmofa.gov.np/mrp/page10.php ).

2. you need to be in person present if you are submitting form.

3. It will take min 45 days if you are picking from district.

4. If you don't have time, then you can take min in 10 days, but you need to take signed pp to ktm and need to submit in person and they will give you receipt.

5. All people who wants withing 10 days comes to ktm. So people lined up 3/4 am in morning and there is no guarantee that your turn will come.

On the other hand:

here if you send email to info@nepalembassyusa.org and ask for send form, they will send you. fille up form (if it is wrong, they will correct), take pp sized photo anywhere (if it is not correct size, they will make correct) and send through mail. no in person presence, no line, and no hassel, just peace of mind.

I got my passport renewed in April 2014 in Kathmandu. As H1B said if you are from district other than Kathmandu you need 'Sifarish' from the respective district office. Myself being from Kathmandu got it done from CDO office in Babar Mahal. There are two types of passport issuing service- Regular and 'Druta Sewa'. Having short time in Nepal I chose the 'Druta Sewa'. Here is what I did to get the passport in 7 days:
1.Got the forms filled electronically in one of the store near PP office in Narayanhiti - Cost Rs.300
2. Get PP size photos in the same store for Rs. 80.
3. Get the sifarish from CDO office. Need to fill up a form with stamp. cost- about Rs.50
4. Deposit Rs. 10000 in IME Bank, Narayanhiti Branch.
5. Submit the form, get the receipt and come back on the 7th day with the receipt and collect your new MRP.
Recently, the waiting time in queue is not that long as number of receiving counters have increased. I am not saying there is no waiting time but not as much as we are hearing in the media. As a Nepali you should not expect super service in a government office but given the number of people applying for passport I found their service satisfactory.

Thank you Free H1B and adhikari_bandhu. I really appreciate for you guys input.

I did talk to the DC people and they said something similar to what you guys have mentioned, I just wanted to double check before embarking on it.

I am from Ktm, so hopefully it will get it renewed in a week. I do have around 3 weeks so shouldn't be an issues.

One has question to Adhikari ji though, which passport did the immigration used at the port of entry? I assume, your old passport since it's the one with the visa? FYI I'm in H1B visa at the moment.

premsh ji,
No I had to show both the passports while departing KTM bcoz the old passport carried a big stamp saying 'Cancelled' and only the new one in US POE .
My suggestion for you is to initiate the procedure as soon as you reach Nepal. Things like holidays we are not aware of (this happened to me), bandh, hadtal, chakka jam etc etc. might prolong the procedure.
