Hi! all,

I am coming to Minnesota early January for my undergraduate. I am looking for some suggestions on the things to bring with me from Nepal. I imagine you can probably buy most of the things you need there in the US, but what are the things that you can’t get there or things that make financially sense to bring from Nepal?

Thank you all for your valuable inputs,
Smriti

wow.. Minnesota on January. Be prepared for dead cold winter. So, bring big coats, big jackets, hats, gloves etc. Remember that it could be -50 deg C outside but room temprature in apartment, colleges, groceries or anywhere indoor is well heated and you can't wear all those insulated clothes indoor.  And during winter you will be spending 99% of time indoors except geeting into parking from the building. So make your selection based on this too. And fashion here is different than Nepal. So, you may not like what you are used to in Nepal in few months.

The first few months or may be a year would be very harsh and bleak. So bring enough moneys so that you do not have to struggle from beginning while you are still getting used to society, culture, weather and overall system here. Once you are here try spending more times with friends, schools, spend much of your time on social activites in school and among friends. That would keep you little far from being home sick.

Besides tuition, books and apartment/dorm rent, how much MONEY do you guys suggest one should bring for the first year?  I know it varies per person, but what is your general estimate?

@Smriti:

Textbooks tend to be quite expensive.  Be prepared to pay almost $1000 easily on textbooks.  Unfortunately, you cannot bring those from Nepal.

I recommend bringing small luxuries that can tide you over during the bouts of homesick moments.  In my case, it was jhol titaura, churpi, chiya, music I used to listen back home, etc.

Since you are coming to Minnesota, I am sure there are other Nepalis in your school.  I am sure they will help you find your way during your first few weeks/months.  But don't limit your circle to just Nepalis however enticing that may be.  Expand your horizon, so to speak.

World awaits you.  Good luck!

Dont Bring anything eccept some  clothing for winter. Learn driving and make sure you have driving licence that will help you with your insurance in the future.  you can find branded  and good  clothes here for lot cheaper than in Nepal so dont bring extra clothing.You can find every single thing which you can find in Nepal in cheaper price. Momo ko bhado pressure cooker you will get here in lot cheaper. spices you can find everything here.

Make sure you have your I20 and other travel document on your hand carry or purse not on luggage. And you should be able to tell the address or contact information of the place or person you will be going/contacting when you reach to the USA (failing to do so may get you in trouble in immigration)

I was looking to post another question to Nepali friends here. Especially friends who have been living in the US for 15 years now, had very few, if any, Nepali friends, were a loner and did not know what she likes anymore (midlife) to suggest what she should've asked from her visiting relative to bring from Nepal? e.g a Shirt from JuJu wears, Pusthakari, Nepal tea house tea?

This is a matter of personal preference. That's why take this question as a survey. Please.

By the way, is OP still hanging out at Sajha. How does it feel now its been seven years, if you are still living in US? Curious Saturday morning for me.

The User Interface is confusing so I will try to summarize the question.

The Original Post is irrelevant and outdated. The OP has moved on.

New Survey Question: What would you request your visiting relative from Nepal bring for you in United States, if you have lived here for 15 years?

Survey Response so far:

kalidasbhaisaab = Nothing.
helpitusa = Nothing.
