There are quite a few Nepalese in Des Moines area working in Insurance and Financial sector. Unfortunately, the ones I knew have already moved to other cities.

Yes 3S00L, i have been staying here since 9 months in Des Moines, IA.

Regarding living, it's affordable and winter is short which starts from Dec-Feb. I have likened it very much so far.

There is small good nepalese community involving in different activities such as soccer, volleyball etc.

If you need help in particular issue, please message me.

Peace

Sirus_Me? Who're you kidding by "Winter is short" comment? I spent 5 years in that region.

Winter is brutal and not short at all unless you consider November - April (6 months) a short one.

@footyfan: Well,  the temp is around 45F everyday this month(Nov.) and this weekend it's gonna be around 61F. When i came during Feb-March, it was like 30F. i don't call that winter unless it gets 10F or below.

So may be it depends on how we define winter.

Peace

Winter is short in Des Moines re? You must me kidding or you have never lived in Iowa in the winter. DSM has one brutal winter season. From Mid october to Mid April. If you call it short then what is the definiton of long winter? I must say that last year winter was mild. Don't know about this year as I have already moved out.

DSM is pretty village setting town. Nothing fancy to brag about other than peace and quietness. No traffic no hassle. Go to work, come home and relax on your couch and watch tv, eat masu bhat. Most of the nepalese here are from Maharishi university of management, couple of DV wallas and hundreds of Bhutanese refugee settlers. One thing I noticed was people who came directly to DSM loved DSM and people who came from other part of USA hated DSM.

Dude, like I said, I spent 5 years in that region. You 'only' moved in Feb-March last year. In Denver, people get snow in May, too but they do get to 'enjoy' 65 degree weather in March. Does it mean that their winter is short? Spend 3 years in the midwest and lets have a conversation. Actually, come back in May and then tell me how short did you really find Des Moines winter.

ycl: Haha exactly bro, i am here to help the poor guy who asked for help. Other people instead of pleading for help, are bashing me up with different issue.

Oh wow, oh wow typical nepali nature, i would say :)..

Ah soccer khelnu parcha yo saturday.

Sajha is awesome and so are the most of the ppl. in sajha. It's really great to have so many infos. from you guys. Special thanks to 'Serus_Me' bro with all those details and also would like to thanks 'footyfan', 'jymbond' and 'chappaljutta' bros for the reactions. I don't worry about the cold as I already have made a decision about moving to iowa. I am happy at least there are some nepalese in iowa.

I wasn't trying to be a smart-ass or a prick. I was merely correcting Sirus_Me, having spent 5 years in the region, I know how cold it gets. There was a time in 2009 when the temperature didn't go above 32 degrees for 52 days! How ridiculous is that.

Anyway 35001, there's this guy that I found out via fb who still lives in the area (We went to same school). I can forward your questions if you have any specific ones.

Welcome to Iowa 3S00L! Great place to live.

Where is the Nepalese community concentrated in Des Moines? Are there any events organized by the community?
