 Dear Sajhaities, first of all a very happy bijaya dashami to you all. Need some help. My aunt want me to buy a Jaau (Jamara ropne product). I don't know what should i ask for if i go to Indian Store or somewhere else. Does anybody knows what do they call Jaau in english. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Jamara is Barley Sprouts. You can buy Barley in Indian stores or any other grocery stores. Look into the soup section of the grocery stores or you can ask any of the associates.

 jamara is not just jau, it can be jau, gahu, dhaan, makai or any combination of these grains. but people generally prefer jau because it's offered to bishnu.

 Thanks jantarei for the info, i didn't know that. Was not aware of that info, i thought Jamara is only made from Jau. Thanks :-)

The following info might also be helpful:

The first day of Dashai is known as Ghatasthapana. On this day, a holy water vessel representing Durga is established and oat seed is sown for its seedlings to be used as “Jamara” on the 10th day.
