@nepcha1, thank you first of all for at least putting forward a logical and respectful argument...and not calling me jaatha and swearing to slit my throat with khukuri...as for the national stuff...i say, lets not talk about bird, color, animal etc etc...coz these things dont matter in our practical life..lets stick to the topic and that is the dress..

just tell me one thing, how would you guys feel if on the occasion of international students day you had to wear dhoti kurta to represent nepal..if it was national dress of our country...

 @ abodhbalak

You live in nepali land, use nepali citizenship and passport but in your heart india beats more than Nepal. This is the real problem. If you true heartedly think yourself as a nepali you will not discorn daura suruwal. Nepal is made by daura suruwal wearer but dhoti. So, the newcomers like you should have little respect for the real nepali costume. There are many nepalese speaking people in west bengal and uttaranchal. They never wanted daura suruwal as the state dress however, they wear daura suruwal in traditional ocassion as an ethnic dress. Nobody is forcing you to wear daura suruwal you are free to wear your air conditioned dhoti but learn to respect things that have nepali identity. If you cant respect 'em shove your a$$ somewhere in Bihar where you really belong.

abodhbalak .. where do you live?? according to you "how come a dress that nobody wears in a radius of 500 miles from where im " 500 miles radius for your place.. you do not see daura suruwal? you must be living in south bihar or uttarpradesh for that.

Ther is no  other dress that can represent Nepal other than daura suruwal. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s a very parochial when we can’t go beyond the semantics of the ‘national entities.’ I am pretty sure every Nepali is proud of our emblems – be they are called ‘national’ or not. If it means anything, I am from Hills and come from one of the so-called upper castes. I have had my pride in Daura Suruwal and Dhaka/Bhadgaunle topi and I still do, not because it was my national dress but it was/is my culture. Notwithstanding that belief, I feel proud to see other Nepali ethnic groups in their own attire or daura suruwal, if they prefer. It’s a personal choice. The same feeling doesn’t evoke when I see a person in casual western dress. This doesn’t preclude the whole idea of Nepaliness. It goes beyond what’s outside the skin to what’s inside it. I digress.

I would rather not have a national dress than have one that excludes a third of the population and tangentially perpetuate discrimination. Just my viewpoint.  I respect Daura Suruwal just as much as I respect other ethnic costumes.  Yet, this matter is equally important to me as any other Nepali. I see a systematic injustice laden by the establishment to forcefully integrate beyond the idea of Nepaliness- not the nominal Citizenship paper but the realignment of one’s belief to go a mile further to prove you are a Nepali. Why are our most national emblems representatives only of hills? Coincidence? I don’t think so.

There are other countries too which do not have a single national dress. Not surprisingly, they too are multi-cultural and one set of attire didn’t represent all ethnic groups. So, is the case of language, religion, food, and so on. It’s imperative upon all of us to ensure every one of us is represented in our national codes.  If diversity ensures unity, and paradoxically uniformity, why can’t we have it?

It's a pity that we resort to uncivil discussion every time we have an important national issue at hand. Almost always the debate disintegrates into ad hominem. Why is anyone who disagrees to a popular sentiment a stupid, or worse yet both stupid and unpatriotic? Let’s have a rational discourse and a modicum of civility.

Brahmins and [Disallowed String for - castist reference]s do not have any politics in making Daura Surwal it's national dress. It is a false propoganda BEING SPREAD BY COMMUNIST TRAITORS.

Most brahmins and [Disallowed String for - castist reference]s wear WHITE DHOTIS to perform religious acts unlike other casts, but yet most BRAHMINS and CHHETRIS are also proud to wear Daura Surwals. So no it is not even the cultural dress of brahmins and [Disallowed String for - castist reference]s.

@Abodhbaalak- Your ancestors are from Bihar and you say it is more developed than most of Nepal. While this may be true, you need to revert the decision your ancestors made and go to BIHAR and re-live the lives of your forefathers and wear your DHOTI KURTA...then you will see ppl within 500 miles radius of your exquisite bihari life.

I second u bhakunde bro.Mathiko coments herda i still feel ki after yrs of study and college ketaharu ko aaja civilized discussion garne culture chaina.Bichara abodhbaalak lai gaali garya actually aafai gaali garya ho.I myself am for daura surwal as national dress because it symbolizes the unity(mere geographical it be) of petty hill states into nepal.but lets discuss in civilized manner.even musarraf and manmohan singh shake hands and address eachother as "his excellency".Tyo golchhe sarki le ramchandra poudel ko daant todeko jasto nagarana ho keta ho.
PS-i dont think being a madhesi makes one more corrupt. Hamra khatti pahadi chi ku wa k kaam thiye ra.
