Many times here in sajha you will see a thread asking to vote for the posters son/daughter/niece/nephew. We have obliged because we wanted to help Nepali community.
But I always wonder what the point about this all is, and wonder if you guys feel the same.
I mean, most of the time the kids are toddler or infants, who don’t even know what’s going on. So who are we pleasing then? The parents? And pleasing how? Not by being honest but just voting because he/she asked for it. To me that’s like starting a random poll and asking to pick option A, no matter what that option is.
Not trying to be disrespectful, I am just curious if anybody else feels that way.

I vote because someone asked for something that cost nothing for me except 1 or 2 minutes and i am not loosing anything either. Regarding the pleasure, i guess the person or the family itself or anyone who knows that person my get pleased and my one or two minute would help someone get a lititl bit smile i would definitely do that. .

We can be honest while voting the picture but the problem is me myself don't flip through all the option. I just don't go through all the pictures. may be i can't judge properly or i was being too lazy to go through all the pictures or any reason. in my opinion if someobody is asking something from which we don't have to loose or spend anything  or which doesn't count much for me i just give that away. you know, if i have something and you need that which doesn't mean anything to me i will give that . Never thought about that way.

We are Nepalese and that's how we get things done. Create a sense of knowing or to know someone and then ask for help, which in a way is how we roll.. Stinks if you ask me...

@Dhhirajohja, Right on brother.

@Rachhas, I agree with you, but I am asking from the poster's point of view more than the voters. I have voted for the said kid in the past, I just don't know why people ask for it. Curious, that's all.

@pichas, Not sure if this is Nepali only mentality. A few of my coworkers have asked this and they aren't Nepali. I sense that the parents get sense of pride when their kids win the title; but wouldn't it be a more proud moment if the vote was received by the merit of the kid rather than the ability of the parents to garner the votes?

The first priority of a parent, specially when s/he has a toddler or smaller kid, is always the kid. If you have a kid, you would know how happy you would be when your kid wins a prize. Just getting straight As or just getting fewer Bs or fewer Cs also makes you deeply satisfied for the hardships you take on. That is the human nature.

The competitions decided by public voting is never fair. Winning the prize by the merit of the kid without push or campaign from parents and well-wisher is a hypothesis that surely fails. If you participate in the competition, you must commit your full-effort for campaigning, otherwise just don't participate. There are many other competitions where biased judgement such as public voting would affect a little and the kid has a fair chance of winning through his/her merit.

Fat Beast, your response actually makes sense.

Saaj, I can't argue that. Sure, I'd be happy to see my kid get A in his exam, who wouldn't? But I am not sure if I will be as much happy if I gave the exam for him (say take home exam); this is similar. When a kid gets straight As, you're happy because he/she worked for it and got what he deserved. What did the infant/toddler do in the case that we're discussing. True, that the kid won't win a public voting match w/o help from parents, but why even participate and go around public asking for vote? I still don't get it.

Geo, Again, I will be more happy if my kid wins a prize that he deserves. And yes, I have a kid.

Well everyone loves their kid but you need to keep the love in your comfort zone. Saying my kid is competing for this and you can vote for him if you like is nice to say than to say please vote for my kid ; hello he is my kid .

People are different so as their priorities and interests. Stiffler, you may hesitate going around asking for vote as you don't understand why others do that. This implies that your infant/toddler may be losing a chance to win a prize from the competition of that nature. I have already mentioned that those kind of competition is not a fair competition where the merit of a child is judged. So, the best would be staying out of the competition if the parent is confused about vote-campaigning.

Getting straight As, which you consider as the result of kid's work, may not reflect the kid's merit. The role of a parent, who works together with the kid, is pretty much significant. Most (toddler / elementary school) kids, who don't get straight As, fail because of improper environment, mostly due to lack of proper parenting. I believe you understand this. Parent's involvement is necessary for a kid to develop skills and expose merits. The voting campaign is an effort similar to helping a kid by a concerned parent, who is interested keeping his/her kid ahead in a competition.

I am blown away by your argument comparing a kid getting A on his studies (with his merit) to getting voted "Infant of the year" because of his dad's voting campaign (are we seriously not finding any difference here?).

I think I have made my point already clear, I have nothing against the parents who ask for votes. I just wanted to understand who they are doing it for, the kids or themselves.

It's to fuel their egos.
These days people even put their kids picture right after they were born in facebook. I hate when my wall is full with kids with sal and nal, you might say it's love . Basically a parent asking for vote is just fueling their ego.
Why would anyone cares for someone else's kid .

i dont have any kids yet i do understand how much does it pay to have you kids rewarded, which infact is a reward that the kids or the parents may not have put a lot of effort.
however since these awards are merited to the one who bags more vote not particulatly who is a cute pie, so what the hell, vote for it. ani, the first thing you do to share anything to anyone is you go to your nepali bandhus, you being in sajha is the proof. i guess thats what the parents did, came to sajah to ask for your vaulable vote.

yesto kura ma pani ke dimag khapairayeko yaar. khurrukka diye bhaihalyo ni- din man lage, man na lage na dine, thats cool too

Yeah, I do see your point.
Dimaag khapairayeko haina; but having seen so many requests I wanted to genuinely understand the motive.
Like Pichas bro said, ego could be a part of it too; but mostly it sounds like their love for their kids guided or misguided.

Honestly speaking, the pictures of other kids on that particular poll were so much cuter than the cheat's kid. Though cute, his kid had virtually no chance of winning and I think he knew that so he decided to undertake the fraudulent scheme to steal that $250 from the real winner. Shame on you those who cast the undeserving votes.

People from our country blame just the leaders, but in fact, the kind of corrupted environment, that exists there, is all because of people like us. A lot of times, the real culprit could be the person in your mirror.

Nice call there Stiffler! Bravo!!

Parents involvement is crucial for a kid's success, whether getting A or getting voted. It is also the choice and interest of parents (may be it is indeed fueled by their ego or may be genuine interest).

Kids getting awarded without parents' involvement (or merit based as you say) through public voting is only possible if all candidates are equally exposed and the voters are well-informed about the candidates so that the voters have enough information to make their choice. This is not normally true. Most voters do not look other candidates than the one they are going to vote. This is nothing but a hollow judgement at best. How could the voting result coming from such a hollow judgment be a fair result to evaluate the kid's own merit? That is the limitation of the competition and the limitation for expecting the merit of the award. Whether you vote to please the parent or to please yourself, if your vote helps to win the kid, then the kid is the winner making both you and the parents smile. I think, that is the only purpose of such parental campaigning.

"tyo ghantauke fuchhe" --- although it may hurt the parent, i liked the use of the "kharro" words.
