I am not a tax expert but i personally know few people who are not in status for last 8 years and been filing their taxes since then. they did this year too and already got their dues back too. Just don't claim too much, do the basic so u can get your federal back. As long as your income doesn't exceed 46k, u will be alright. The irony is if u don't file this year, u have to pay hefty fine when u do next time. It all up to u.

I would suggest you to file taxes. Later in anyways you get a chance to apply for green card either through marrige or some other future immigration bill, your tax history will be checked. It is against the law not to file you taxes is year if you have income. If you have never filed taxes before even if you had income they might reject your chances of being PR.
