Dare to say "NO" instead of bringing your "Geda". I wrote my observation, what's your problem?

There is no overnigh change. All comes and goes gradually. If there was no mistakes yesterday, there would be no outcry today.  Honest "Khas-bahuns" lovers of Nepal do not hesitate to realize the mistakes done in the past but the solution is not clear. Only the sick minds overlook the mistakes committed in the past but wish the things get corrected "magically". NO, there is no such magical solution.

Do you really know what is Khas and who are khas???? Originally chhetris are of the khas origin. Bahuns started calling themselves a khas only after Janajati and other so called aboriginals movement. Bahuns used to call "Khasetro" derogatorally to chhetris untill few years back. Khas are the most deprived people living most misreable life in Nepal. Do you know how they live in Humla, Jumla, Mugu, Kalikot, Bajura ???

Stop poliiticizing everything. Language is a tool to make communication. Chhetris & thakuris (Khas) because of their tradition to join Nepal Army spreaded all over Nepal during different unification campaign. In addition, they are the most populated people. So, Nepali language automatically became common language of communication. My hometown is near India, all the bussinessmen and locals of Indian town adjancen to my hometown speak Nepali language. Have you ever been to Sikkim? Marwadis, biharis, bhutia, lepchas and all other non-nepali people speak fluent Nepali. Do you have any logic how they could speak Nepali ???........tyaha pani khas kai haikambad chalyo hola haina???

I know, your questions will take this discussion to another direction. So, I hesitated to answer. However, I felt that unanswering a question is not nice.


First of all, this is not "ethnic politics", this is just unhiding the truth that was dumped under the mat.

Many "khas" people believe that the word "Khas" is derrogatory, but I think NO. Derrogatory feeling depends on how you use it. For example, "Newari" was not a derrogatory word until few years ago, but now "Newari" is considered as a derogatory word. Do not use "NEWARI" but use "NEWAR" only. People prefer to use either Newar or Newah or Nepal instead of adding "I". Similarly "Madise" "Bhote" "Jyapu" were considered derrogatory until some years ago, but now these words are used proudly by the respective community with minor modifications.

In my understanding, Bahun and Chhetri is cast and "Khas" is language, commonly used as mother tongue by many cast groups (bahun, chhetri, thakuri, dalits etc.) originated in Khasan (Sinjali) region. This language was called "Sinjali" when Sinja was powerful. Just listen BBC broadcasted yesterday, the Khas scholars have claimed Sinja (Karnali) region as the origin of this language. You also refer Sinja region (Humla, Jumla, Mugu, Kalikot, Bajura) to note the presence of Khas community. Historians have several theories on evolution of the word "Khas", including the reference to Kasmir (a word evolved through Kasami -- meaning the people of Kas region). The Kas is a short form of Caucasian, which was frequently crossed by Silkroad travellers on the way to ancient Persia. This historical aspect is not taught in Nepal but "Ne-muni" theory is taught for a reason. "Khas" people do not know the significance of their root and "Khas" word makes them feel derogatory because it is close to the word "khasnu", however "Khas" is not taken from that word. It is not derrogatory at all. Instead, it connects their root with the Caucasians (the origin of many Europeans and Americans) who lead this world.

Next, it was renamed as the "Parbate" language when Parbat was a major political player. After "Gorkha" became powerful, this language was renamed as "Gorkhali". The "Khas" language expanded with expansion of "Gorkhali" army, which is mostly led by Chhetris and Thakuris, but bahuns also kept moving together voluntarily in search of opportunity, and involuntarily as the beurocrates representing Shah-Rana regime. After collapse of Rana regime, this language started claiming "Nepali" nomenclature. Since then, "Nepali" was widely circulated through "Anibarya Mahendramala", teaching the language as the "Nepali bishay" in school education. The khas language in India (Darjeeling, Sikkim, Dehradoon etc.) is known as "Gorkhali". Narbahadur Bhandari of Sikkim, with help of other cultural exchange activists (poets, singers, artists) popularized it as Nepali in Sikkim and many other parts (Burma, Assam, Meghalaya) but some regions (e.g. Darjiling) still prefers using Gorkhali.

Magar, Gurung, Rai and Limbu also travelled as Nepal Army together with Chhetris, but did they get a chance to spread their language? No. Why? Why only Chhetris and Thakuris got chance to spread the language all over the country? Did you get a sense of unequality here? Khas language is certainly more common in Nepal than any other language, but that does not allow it to be called as "Nepali" deleting its prior identity "Gorkhali" or "Parbate" if not "Khas". Assume, if English would be more common than "Gorkhali" language in Nepal soon or later, then, shall we say English as "Nepali" language?

So, be honest and say "wrong is wrong" - "right is right". If you always enjoy kicking your brother, your brother would enjoy when you get kicked by others. This is human nature. No foul play. That's why it is said - what goes around come around.

जसरी हामी नेपाली भाषा,साहित्य र संस्कृति माथि भारतीय प्रभाव बढ्यो भनेर भनिरहेका छौ, त्यसै गरेर भारतीयहरु भारतीय संस्कृति माथि अङ्रेजी प्रभाव बढ्यो भनेर हल्ला मच्चाइ रहेका छन्। त्यसो त चना दाइले भने झै नेपालमा बोलिने अन्य भाषाहरुमा नेपालीको भाषाको प्रभाव त आफ्नो ठाउँमा छदै छ। यहाँ सम्म कि नेपाली भाषा एउटा सिमित समुदायको भाषा हो भन्ने तर्क पनि छ। तर एउटा भाषा माथि अर्को भाषाको प्रभाव हुनुलाई म असामान्य कुरा मान्दिन। भाषा बैज्ञानीकहरुले गरेको एउटा अध्ययनमा के देखिएको छ भने अबको १०० बर्ष भित्र विश्वको ९४ प्रतिशत भाषा हराएर जानेछन्। अरु भाषाको प्रभाव बढ्दै गएर हाम्रो भाषा लोप हुने भाषाको सुचीमा नपरोस्। तर टाइलाई जवर्दस्ती कन्ठे लङौटी भन्दैमा नेपाली भाषाको बिकास हुँदैन, टाइलाई टाइनै भन्नु पर्छ अनि बाबु र आमा भन्दा मिठो शब्द फादर र मदर चाँही हुन सक्दैन। हाम्रो चासो यो हो अली अली गर्दै दुधमा मिसेको यो पानी बढ्दै गएर भोली दुध नै पानीमा परिणत नहोस्। तर त्यस्को लागि हिन्दी फिलिम हेर्दै नहेर्ने, हिन्दी संगीत सुन्दै नसुन्ने, हिन्दी साहित्य पढ्दै नपढ्ने गर्‍यो भने ठीक हुन्छ भन्ने होइन। हामीले त सके जति पढ्नुपर्छ, सके जति सुन्नुपर्छ र सके जति बुझ्नुपर्छ र आफुले आर्जन गरेको ज्ञानलाई नेपालीमा बाँड्नुपर्छ। तर यसो भन्दा मैले विश्व सामाखुशीमा र निस्चल सोर्हखुट्टे मा लगाउने तल्लो श्रेणीको हिन्दी चल्चित्र, केश काट्ने ठाउँमा र पान खाने ठाउँमा बज्ने कर्कश ध्वनीको  हिन्दी संगित अथवा कहिले नसकिने र चौबिसै घण्टा चालु रहने हिन्दी सिरियलहरुको वकालत गरेको होइन। ब्रह्मान्डको सृस्‍टि कसरी भयो भनेर पत्ता लगाउने जिम्मेवारी लिएका वैज्ञानीक स्टेफेन हकिङ्सले आफ्नो नयाँ पुस्तक ग्रान्ड डिजाइनमा यथार्थतालाई परिभाषित गर्दै लेखेका छन्, यथार्थ भन्ने कुरा हेर्नेले कुन धरातलमा रहेर हेरेको छ भन्ने कुरामा भर पर्छ, जस्तो एउटा गोलो सिसी भित्र राखेको माछोले बाहिर सिधा बाटोमा हिंडेको मान्छेलाई पनि घुमेको बाटोमा हिंडेको देखिरहेको हुन्छ।

हो नेपाल झरिरहेको छ, नेपाल फुटिरहेको छ तर त्यस्को कारण नेपालमा बढेको भारतीय भाषा, साहित्य र संस्कृतिको प्रभाव होइन त्यस्को कारण हामीमा बढेको स्वार्थ हो, हामीमा बढेको असहिष्णु भावना हो, एक अर्काप्रती सम्मानको कमी हो। हामी एकले अर्को लाई बाहुन देख्छौ, नेवार देख्छौ र क्षत्रिय देख्छौ। नेपाल फुट्नुको कारण एकले अर्कोलाई नेपाली देख्न नसक्नु हो। एक अर्काको भाषालाई, धर्मलाई सम्मान गर्न नसक्नु हो। यही साझामा हेरुन हामी एकले अर्कोलाई कति उडाइरहेका छौ? कति गाली गरिरहेका छौ? यस्तो गरेपछि लाग्छ त देश उँभो?

अन्त्यमा एउटा प्रसँग:

शायद म कक्षा चारमा हुँदा होला मेरो वर्तबन्ध भयो, गुरुले चोखो खानुपर्छ, बिहान बेलुका गायत्री पढ्नुपर्छ भनेर सिकाएका थिए, तर मैले धेरै बुझिछु क्या रे! हामी एउटा क्षत्रिय परिवारको घरमा भाँडामा बस्थ्यौ। एक दिन घरबेटी आमाले खाना पठाउनु भएछ, म आफ्नी आमासँग खूब कराँए, "क्षत्रियले पकाएको पनि खान्छन्?" पछी कुरा बुझ्दै गएँ, मलाई त्यो कुरा सम्झेर अहिले पनि थकथकी लाग्छ। अझै पनि धेरै कुरा बुझ्नु बाँकी छ।

Hat's off to your commendable knowledge on Khas

You know lot of facts about the khaskura. I hope you also know how original khas kura (language jumli / sinjali speak) sounds. It is way different than present day Nepali language. In fact, Nepali language is a medley of many ethnic Nepali languages. You can find countless of words imported from Newari, magar, gurung, rai, limbu and even maithili language. It flourished when parbate/ gorkhali people came in contact of ethnic people.Look at the widespread populartiy of kauda, ghatu, maruni, sakewa etc. Would they be so popular if confined in mother language only. I am a chhetri and a die hard fan of Magar's Kauda songs and sunuwar's Maruni songs. So, Nepali language, though originated from khaskura, is a common and fortified equally by all of ethinic people and their language. I do not think khas people imposed their language on any other group. Bahun, a class of khas community, used to use sanskrit language regarding DEV-VANI among themselves. Since Bahuns were above the law by religious belief nobody imposed  KACHHI BAAT (Khaskura) to them. What made them use Nepali language? It's easyness and commonness helped in its growth.

Let me ask you a question. Almost everyone in Nepal knows Hindi language. Has anybody imposed it on us? No, it's us who learn it from its widespread accesibility through media, entertainment and literature. To add, in a group of people comprising of a Nepali, a chinese, Indian, Thai, Korean, cameronian, and a turkish nationals. Which language you use? Uninamously, a language that is more or less known to all. May be English.

I do not agree with your view, however I really appreciate your information on Khas and origin/developement of Nepali language.
