Hi,

A friend of mine got his OPT starting from mid-July. He has not been able to find any job in all these days and the unemployment time period limit is coming to an end. I learnt that you can be self-employed during OPT. I was wondering if anyone had any information/experiences on it and how should one go about doing it,

Thanks,
greatly appreciated

get a volunteer documentation from any company and/or agency related to the major, and one should be good for a year.

@Mad Season: Do you think you can elaborate on that a bit. Thanks for the reponse.

@kalopani: thanks for your response. I am glad that worked out for you well. Not sure if my friend will prefer that but I will pass it my friend.

Thanks!

if you "your friend"s major is business, even a dhoti store can be used to maintain his status.

I don't understand something here is sajha. Why do people refer "my friend?" I mean if your friend does not know how to use computer or cannot speak English, then it's understandable.

but I will pass it my friend...You moron why do you have to lie. If you not lying then I am sorry, and also like to  pass this message to your friend. "YOU A$$H0LE, YOU'RE the one who is suppose do some research, NOT your friend." This is one reason why you are still unemployed. What do you expect??

I like the reply from Mukurdhom.
By the way, the job is just a formality. You have to fill up some online form yourself saying you are employed in 'xyz' company. I believe nobody checks about this. I have done this myself for my friend :).

But do you guys have any idea what happens after 1 year. If you have to extend to next 17 (or what so ever), is that also easy job? Or is it that you need have have job in your study field. Again, I am not asking what the rule is, I am asking for real experience.

One day I really want to meet these "friends" who supposedly ask one of the sajhabasis and the sajhabasi asks us, they are very good at follow ups as well. Dost ho to aisa (better yet imaginary dost ho to aisa ;))

@Mukurdhon: I definitely can't help you there if you can't understand it. The problem you are having is you can't trust anybody easily. As for my friend, I am indeed asking here for him. He speaks english and can use computer just fine. I asked him to post his problem in Sajha, but he wanted me to do it since he doesn't visit sajha and doesn't have an account. I am just trying to help. No Big deal.

@V2001: Thanks for the response. I hope someone here replies to your questions. Would definitely be helpful.

@Stiffler: The reason I am following up is cause I do care about my friend and am ready to help whenever neeeded. And if you can't believe it, then there is nothing I can do about it.

I don't understand how easily people make up their mind on these situations when they don't know anything at all about the other person. Human behavior is amazing.

mankokura bro,

talk to ur international student office. mine has a form online which I periodically update to let them know that i am "actively seeking employment". My 90 days are also almost over, but no worries if u update your status frequently. (not ur fb status ni feri :P).

I suggest ur friend contact his ISO.

And its understandable that ur friend does not have sajha.

a lot of people here have trust issues and a lot of time :) answering questions is not their motive, finding out why u are asking questions is :)

cheers.

The official wording is"Self-employed business owner. Students on OPT may start a business and be self-employed. In this situation, the student must work full-time. The student must be able to prove that he or she has the proper business licenses and is actively engaged in a business related to the student’s degree program." I don't know what kind of proof, if any, the school is going to require for self-employed people. I don't think the school is going to ask for any proof, at least the one I just talked to didn't. I just called a school nearby and asked the ISO what info. they would need from someone who is self-employed on OPT. They said they will need the name of the business,  start date and business address. They said they will be able to update the SEVIS once they have that.

I wouldn't suggest your friend to go this route (i.e. self-employed business owner). I don't know anyone who has tried it. Most people get an unpaid volunteering job in their field of study and do it for 20 hours weekly to maintain status. Since no one actually verifies the employment, some people just provide their ISO  name of a company (owned by someone they know or just some random company), a start date and employer's mailing address.

For regular OPT

Rule: You have to be employed (either paid or unpaid) at least 20 hours weekly in your field of study. Even volunteering counts as long as the work is related to your  field of study.

Reality: The way to report your employment is by e-mailing your international student office (or filling a form, if your school uses any), The school then puts this information in SEVIS. You just need to give them the name of the company, start date and employer's mailing address. No one verifies this. You could easily lie about this and get away with it.

For OPT extension

Rule: The company needs to be e-verified and the employment needs to be paid
Reality: You have to have the company run your paycheck. As far as I know, there is no way around it.
