Sabkosathi, I agree that the guy in Congo may have had fewer resources to learn the language but I am just mentioning that the level this professor has reached in newari is commendable. If you knew newari, you would have known what I am talking about...
I was comparing myself in English when I was listening to him in Newari. Having been taught in English all my life and speaking everyday for my last few years in the US, I have to admit I still have difficulty communicating in English. I may be generalizing here but with no doubt I can say that there are many Nepalese fellows in the same boat. I am sure he hasn't had as much exposure to newari than I did in English. But his Newari skills has far surpassed my level in English

I don't speak or understand Newari so I couldn't tell how good his newari was. But if you say it's amazing then I will have to trust you on that one. You made a good point about English. I have been exposed to English for more than 20 years and still my english sucks. So, I guess, more power to the Professor!! I retract my previous comment.
amazing ! such accuracy and fluency !
nicknath wrote what I wanted to write..I'm an amateur speaker (more a listener) of Newari, but I can appreciate how one speaks it. I am really worried why my English accent is so bad. I don't hope my accent to improve much even in 20 years from now.

My Salute to Dr. Gellner for all his effort to learn and understand the essence of this unique Newah civilization.
Many thanks to Season Shrestha for bringing him to us with such a nice interview.
