Karl Rabeder grew up poor and thought that life would be wonderful if he had money. But when he got rich, Karl discovered that he was unhappy … so he decided to give away every penny of his £3 million fortune:
"My idea is to have nothing left. Absolutely nothing," he told The Daily Telegraph. "Money is counterproductive – it prevents happiness to come."
Instead, he will move out of his luxury Alpine retreat into a small wooden hut in the mountains or a simple bedsit in Innsbruck.
His entire proceeds are going to charities he set up in Central and Latin America, but he will not even take a salary from these.
"For a long time I believed that more wealth and luxury automatically meant more happiness," he said. "I come from a very poor family where the rules were to work more to achieve more material things, and I applied this for many years," said Mr Rabeder.
But over time, he had another, conflicting feeling.
"More and more I heard the words: ‘Stop what you are doing now – all this luxury and consumerism – and start your real life’," he said. "I had the feeling I was working as a slave for things that I did not wish for or need. I have the feeling that there are lot of people doing the same thing."
What do you think? Is he doing the right thing or is this just a crazy idea of a rich man?
Money Can't Buy Happiness. I agree !
Money can't buy happiness. But jealousy of others, for sure. I would rather be rich and unhappy than poor and unhappy. Rich and happy would be ideal but medium and happy is more likely.
If he is not taking any salary, how is he going to feed himself and pay his bills?
Edit: What he did is great.

धन हुने को मन हुँदैन: मन हुने को धन हुँदैन। यस्को सँगम बिरलै हुन्छ। जस्को सँगम हुन्छ ति असल आत्मा हुन्छन्, बुदिमानि हुन्छन्।
"Money can not buy happiness" only works in debate competition not in real life.
i``ve heard man leave their wealth , profesionalism, family and phd`s behind to become साधु, after all they become monk , all is not to believe towards signs and wonders, its is not about completely fakirs , but
abodes Gods - they themselves is the Yogi...
In the Chinese custom, wealth and money will be transfer link to heaven by burning them when the person died, hoping that the spirits of wealthness and money will be utilised in another life......
i completely disagree, money is the only thing that can buy you happiness. one needs to be smart enough to handle their finances. Money is not everything it's the only thing.
Money may bring happiness but it is not as straight as mathematics. To magnify this happiness, just share 1% or even 0.1% for someone in need. This will bring magic.
Money with the wisdom is a perfect thing to bring happiness in life. Think about "Bill Gates."
पैसा त होस्, खुशी के हुन्छ देखाइ दिन्थे गेडेहरुलाई।
Well, how happy Bill Gates is, he can only feel it. I used to feel...that damm Tiger woods is luckiest person in the world. just think how tensed he was always hiding his relationships before it came in public. Then I felt....ummm...may be I am more happy than him. lol
tiger woods ?? come on man there are poor unhappy people who cheat as well, i don't think that's a valid measurement of how you can say money can't buy you happiness. In all fairness unhappy poor people have little chance to cheat on their wives to begin with, first they have to afford to have a wife.

how can u say bill gates and tiger woods are lucky coz they have money. whatever seen from outside is not always true. what is the use of having such money if u don't have freedom, always fear of losing it. so earn as much as u need and be happy. this guy did a great job. thanks to him that his money helped a lot of poor people. it is so hard to find such people.
* read it somewhere, and is probably true: money can't buy happiness, BUT it can rent it for sure..
soulless
He doesn't understand money. Money does not *automatically* bring you happiness. In the real world, money can help make your life easy and it used properly, can also bring happiness. It is not true that people with money are all unhappy.
I do not have emperical data for this but I think rich people are *more* happy than the poor.
