Hello Friends,
What would your strategies be to cope with depression? What do you do when you feel low (emotionally)?
As always, I will welcome serious responses. If you are thinking to write BS, please stop reading and go back.

Thanks.

Try Lexapro for a while if it works..if depressive thoughts are not constant its just ups and downs of life, but if you feel persistently low, take some medication, its just like as if you have fever you'll take some tylenol and once the fever is relieved you'll discontinue it,

@Raju, does depression have obvious cause? I don't know.
@only assignments, Let's make it the last option.

I think the best option would be to spend time with friends, talk to friends and family members. Some times home sick is another factor. The best option would be to find the reason behind it. It can be job, finance, love and much more. Do yoga. Go to youtube and look for ramdev or anyother person's yoga teaching. Just sit on yoga position and close your eyes so badly and when you will see real dark at the same time you will feel fright. think of your very good moments back home. For me I had so many great incidents like visit to chitwan national park, Darjeeling, Sikkim, Delhi, hariyana, Assam, Mizoram, mukti nath, annapurna reagin, pokhara, jomsom, ghore pani, tato pani along other part of our country. Moments with your friends and family. I think of those areas and the moment I spent there and I really feel relax and excited.

Just be on this position for about 15,20 minutes and see how easy and realx you feel.

If its going beyoung your control please consult the doctor.

There are different way of controlling your mind and this is what I do and try to be happy. my $0.2.

Meditate... i.e. oberve your body and mind. Observe yourself just like you are watching other person who is depressed... what kind of thoughts come in mind and how it affects your body? how it changes? how long does it last? just observe like a scientist without identifying yourself.

Soon you will find the root cause..which is desire. when your desire doen't get fulfilled.. when things get worse.. when unexpected happens..  depression arises.  It is not just you. It is natural.. law of nature applies to all. So, instead of thinking about it, just observe it and come out of it. sooner the better.

If you have free time go for a 10-day vipassana retreat.. its worldwide.. it's free. It helps.

Sometimes, the weather can also make you depressed. For me, I am in the middlewest and whenever snow falls and days become gloomy, I get very depressed. So stay out of such place and stay where there is plenty of light. If you are depressed, avoid yourself from black objects.

I dont think meditation works. Best solution to boost your feelings is EXERCISE. Whatever you can - aerobic. Threadmill, soccer, pushups or whatever.. do it. Dring enough water, sleep in time, sleep deprivation is also a major cause of depression. Never live alone.

In severe case,  try medication. But medicines does not work all the times, it can be considered as last resort.

hahaha ( i dont want to make u more depressed but it sounds funny to me)..

My thoughts for you GC: Find the reason for you being depressed. Everything has a reason and depression cannot be cured. Medications are just temporary. Dont take medications coz u may be used to it. It does no good at the end. So, every cause has a reason. Find it, solve it. And if u really don't know the reason, u are actually not in depression...enjoy ur depression (haha).

Guchcha Chor I don’t know if this will be helping you genuinely but sure thought it's worth try. Recently at an annual cross cultural mental health conference I asked a very insightful, inspiring, and intellect physician Dr. Gabor Mate:

Q. In Buddhism the monks have mentioned "What gives you pleasure also gives you pain?"

A. Pleasure does not give pain but wanting to hold on to pleasure gives pain.

He further added that all psychological problems are lead by the ego.

The ego questions the existence with dysfunctional present.

Ego develops a mechanism to cover the loss of attachment during the childhood resulting in JUDGEMENT, projection, and defence.

Ego is desperate not to make us vulnerable as a result we live in stressful environment needing to constantly please ourselves.

The recovery is in recognizing

Present v Pursuit

Being v Having

Attachment v Detachment

Peace v Happiness

Here I am not explaining in detail, and am leaving the statements which may appear to be vague. The reason I present is for further self reflection and realization in an individual basis.

Hope this help you

@ HomLal,
I tried the observe thing you suggested. I have heard about it a lot and even tried it, but it never worked. But something about the way you explained it, i could better understand the idea. so i tried it again and it worked. I was having trouble falling asleep, having too many thoughts. I tried to observe myself, soon all thoughts disappeared, and i was calm. had good sleep and feel like a child today, i also had vivid dreams i cannot remember, but they were very entertaining.
Even though I am not the one who raised the issue, i thought i should thank you.

Thanks.
