Govt to remove royal statues from capital city

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam has said the government will remove all the statues of the ex-kings and other former royals from Kathmandu to be replaced by public heroes.

Speaking at Ratnapark, Kathmandu Saturday while laying foundation stone for construction of the statue of Sankhadhar Sakhwa, who founded Nepal Sambat, Gautam said the replacement would be done following consensus with political parties.

He said the statues of former kings and other royals would be kept in museum for preservation.

He also urged the Kathmandu residents to suggest the names of eminent figures whose statues could be erected in place of the former royals.

He further sought assistance from locals in building Kathmandu a peaceful, environment friendly and beautiful city as envisioned by the new government. nepalnews.com ia Nov 15 08

This is outrageous. We should not try to erase history! Who built the durbar squares? Should we demolish those too? This is about preserving our history, letting the future generations know through observation what Kathmandu went through. Statues and other historic sites are time stamps that tell a story of this great city. We cannot let the shortsightedness of the politicians wipe the scars that give this city its character.

The statues of the eminent figures with which he plans to replace the exiting statues, can still be built. God knows, Kathmandu is in need of more of these attractions. They'll definitely be welcome! Just don't destroy what we already have.

We have to raise a voice against statue replacement. When you think about Europe and all, they still have statues of kings adorning their city. Those monarchs were toppled, but their statues give the city something to remember its past by.

They are not destroying anything. Like the article says, the statues of the kings will be preserved in the museum. Future generations can learn about the history of Kathmandu through observation in the museum, which btw is the right place for history.

I know they are not destroying it, but wouldn't you rather see historical monuments scattered around the city than stored in a museum somewhere?

Yeah and whose statue would they wanna put there?? Girija, Govinda Raj Joshi, Khum Bdr, and all??? What a load of crap. I am not a fan of Ranas and Shahs (exception of late King Birendra and his family), but come on ....man. Rather than that, employ the nations energy in building schools in village, build bridges to connect two villages.....now that would be a good example and a respectable notions that people would appreciate.

Oh yet again the nepali government is at it, they don't have any crisis like the debt, the roads the traffic, the whole country itself thats why it is going to spend money removing statues of past kings.

All that the new government has done after it took power is to fuel anarchy within the country, put the real issues on the back-burner. The constitution drafting process is still lightyears away and they are engaging themselves in unnecessary activities like bringing down statues of the Royals.

"Speaking at Ratnapark, Kathmandu Saturday while laying foundation stone for construction of the statue of Sankhadhar Sakhwa, who founded Nepal Sambat, Gautam said the replacement would be done following consensus with political parties. Who after Sankhadhar Sakhwa? Politicians. actors, businessmen? May be the government will erect statues of Prachanda, Baburam, Badal, Gririja, Madhav Nepal, BAMDEV etc...... government needs to set its priorities. I believe setting draft of constitution was its objective but now it seems constitution is the last thing in its to do list. He said the statues of former kings and other royals would be kept in museum for preservation." Yeah keep them in the museum so we all will soon forget about them. How many of us visit museum (other than in secondary school) to learn about history. We can not overlook Shah Kings' contribution to build modern Nepal.
