Namaste,
I was wondering if there was anyone in here who has actually extended the OPT after the implementation of the new rule.  My major is Accounting/Economics and when I went to apply for my OPT my DSO said that I would be able to extend my OPT also. The reason he gave was that the category of STEM field were very general so accounting can be considered being under Mathematics. So, my question is, is it in the power of the DSO to extend the OPT or would it be the DOL who would approve the extension?
Please help me out guys.....

As far as I know, if your DSO says that Accouting in that university is under STEM it can be extended...it depends under which categories the university has recorded Accouting program under. It it is under STEM it can be done else he is half informed.

I extended my opt, but I happen to be from Comp Science. But my university worked hard to include Management Inoformation Science(MIS) to be included in STEM..to my best guess is that your department has to get its ass on fire to get itself into STEM. good luck.

Thank you guys for all your response.

Motekaji, can you explain how the process worked? Is it your particular department that has to lobby to be considered to be in the STEM field or is it the DSO that determines it? It is the DOL that approves the extension? Do you file for the extension as you do your OPT and get it approved from DOL?

Hi Guys,

If you have already used your OPT for a Bachelors degree (1st degree), can you get another OPT for an associates degree (2nd degree in a different field)? Has anyone done that and have been successful in obtaining an OPT? I'm getting mixture of answers. Some say, yes you get OPT, since both fields are not related, while others are saying, No, you can't. You have to be climbing up the ladder, in order to get new OPT each time. So which information is correct? Anybody knowledgeable about this issue? Please reply if you know anything regarding this information.

Thank you. Please do reply if you know anything regarding this. Appreciate it.

I also believe that your next degree should be higher to get new OPT.  Please make sure with your international student service.
