My sister got accepted in one of the university  in US and she also got the  US visa.  Her professor had told her that first get the visa then we will talk about the assistantship. But now he is telling her that he cant give her any assistantship in first semester  but he will give one in next semester. If she cant get the assistantship, she cant afford  to pay the tuition.

Is it possible to come to US one month before the classes start and then apply to some affordable
community college without joining the university for which you got the visa for?

I don't think you can apply to a college with an I-20 of some other college. But there might be loop holes you never know.Yes you can come to US months before college starts and look for another cheap college but if she doesn't register in that perticular college for which she got the visa the college might inform the immigration and she might be out of status. But as said, if the accepting college issues and can prove USCIS that she is a full time there and provide her status there might not be a problem. You might want to consult the International Office of the cheap college to be more accurate and or a lawyer.

So far my understanding is, once you are in , without excellent reason you can not skip classes, that means going colleges is the only way to maintain status. Do you think, she will be able to get another college that soon? And will the new college accept her and they have to go through immigration process again.

Better is to go to the university she got the I-20 and visa. Before she finishes the college she can apply and move to new colleges. Or skip and apply to new college and get new I -20 and new visa.

newarni --no,she can not transfer without joining college for which she got VISA coz based on new SEVIS system,no other university, college will be able to accept her without release of SEVIS from the University she has been accepted and  got I-20 for.

I would say something will work out you know. Let her come in the United States. It's still the land of opportunities. Take this chance let her come in, may be ask for some help from fellow Nepalese, including me, if the situation is say in dire straits.

She might have to work her ass out, but all she needs is to see through a sem. Ask her to get as much loan that's possible to get and I AM TELLING YA SOMETHING WILL WORK OUT.

database is right.  she should complete a semester at the school which offered her an I 20.  though it is a land of opportunity, i would nt recommend to come here without some resource.  if she can not pay even for first semester, she will be in trouble.  and one can not come before 30 days of college start date.
