I am planning on going for a Master's degree in Bioinformatics next Fall. I have gotten in few programs but am trying to choose between two programs (final choice). While one is a regular graduate program, the other is a professional/executive program. I will be attending both the programs as a full-time student. I am more inclined towards the professional program as I like their curriculum better and feel that it will better prepare me for a career afterwards and also it is offered by one of the top universities. However, I also want to experience full graduate school experience and feel that joining the regular program will allow me to do so. Still another factor is finding assistantships after I start the program. With the professional program, I might only be able to work on-campus or work on CPT (I am on F-1), but with the regular program chances are I will find an assistantship after my first or second semester.
I have to make a decision fairly soon and would really appreciate if anyone (who's been in a similar situation or understands the situation well) will give me some suggestions.
If you have a job option right now or a prospective job a year before graduation then go for professional program as you would be able to work and study at the same time. But if you do not have any job options right now and not planning to soon and there is a prospect of good assistantship and full tuition waiver, then full time student life is much better.
My suggestions is also to check the career department of the school you are attending and where all the students are getting places, international students and their placement history, etc as these will help you in your possible job landing in future.
