Ubuntu problem

After downloaded a software or program from net to my dekstop,I couldn`t install to Ubunto OS.It seems it needs dev package....How can I solve the problem.Plz give me idea.Thanx....

When I double click the downloaded program,no installation starts.It shows the location of the file.I did like in windows.Recently,I have installed Ubuntu in my laptop.So,I would to make it more attractive installing some additional softwares.I am new to Ubuntu.Thank you

Curious...
1. Which Ubuntu? Which version of Ubuntu? Gutsy? Feisty? Edgy?
2. Which Software are you trying to install?
3. Have you looked at installation instruction for that Software for Linux? (Is it even good for Linux? Do you need to get it through WINE?). No I don't think it's gonna work like the way it does in Windows. Yeah like meek said, please explain the configuration.

Just one more curiosity... How did you install Ubuntu? Clean installation, single OS? Dual OS along with Windows? Used Virtual Machine?

Thanx for your curiosity.Its Ubuntu 7.10 - the Gutsy.I`m new to Linux.I`ve Windows XP and Linux installed in two different hard disk partition.I`m not using Virtual Machine.Thinking to use it. I`m trying to install Real Player for linux(RealPlayer11GOLD.bin),Beryl(aquamarine-0.2.1.tar.bz2)and virtual machine(VMware-player-2.0.3-80004.i386.tar.gz)...etc..But I couldn`t install in my laptop.I don`t have gone through installation process in linux.Please give idea about it...Thanx in advance...

I don't know why you want Beryl when Gutsy comes with compiz.

I think you should Google a whole lot, I am sure you will find bunch of solutions like the one I provided above.

ok mr sakura, now u need to follow the following steps:
1. either copy that file to the pen drive or dvd/cd(burn).
2. restart computer with the booting device usb drive(if u had file in pen drive) and dvd/cd if u have in dvd.

then computer will boot from pen-drive...or dvd whichever u select... and u can install it .....

if u couldn't able to do this.... redownload the ubuntu again... ur file may corrupt....

Learn the shell installation in Linux. . Read the RPM installation in linux. For simplicity type

[root@localhost]# man rpm

and read this manual page...you will get what you want.
