I want to go nepal and want to stay there for about 2 months .That means I don;t want to take the next spring semester .I went to the school to discuss about me .They told me that if you are not registering for the nest semester ,you need to reapply obtain a new I-20 and reapply for the visa at the counselor. But from my understanding as long as the visa is not expired .you don;t need to reapply .Will it be ok to go nepal and reapllying for coming back US or the advisor hasn;t told the truth?

in 2005, i break  a fall semester and went to nepal  .. . at that time i did had a visa  till 2007 so while in  return .. dont have to apply visa ...as i had already so .. . .  about i-20 .. .  the college will send u  the new i-20 back  at ur home address .. ..   cause they have some deadlines for issuing i-20 ...so..they will send u back one .. . u have to telll them before u leave ... .about ur case .. ..   when u come back u just need to show ur new  i-20 at the  immigration .. but do keep the  old i-20 tooo . . ..   .let me know  if u want more info .. .  the  people  who havent done that will just scare you. .. sayin ...false info .. . ..

thanks bash, for the information .
i would also like to add some information that i received today ,actually the procedure changed from 2006 and now when you take a semester break the school ends your student status and you need to reapply for the college .the college will easily send you the i-20, but according to the new rule you need to get to the consular and apply for the new visa .and reapply for the SEVIS too because the school will end your SEVIS status too when you take a semester break.I think it would not be hard to get a new visa when you are doing good at your current university but still we have to think twice before taking the risk.

.Here are the rules.

If you have a valid visa, you don't have to apply again.

You do not have to get a new I-20. You have to get your International Student Advisor to sign on your I-20 (the last page where it wants their signature as a proof that they are allowing you to get out of the US and come back again).

BUT, I would suggest you to not take a semester break. If you're really that homesick, then go to Nepal during winter or summer break. Taking a semester break may cause un-intended complications regarding immigration and other things. Do you really want to take those chances?
