Visit Nepal was for promoting HIS BUSINESS(he is in Tourism Industry) with Chamber of Commerce and the Govt(they put $$ in this too). So its was not like he did he did it for free(there was a motive cause the Mao's were putting the dent in that Industry). Bhaktaour Cancer Hospital(Built in memory of one of his family members who passed away from Cancer) yep will give him credit for tha. Thamel- he was one of the first ones to open business(Ktm guest house) to lure tourists away from freak street in Jhochey, I will give him credit for that. But there were a lotta others who helped make Thamel what it is today(the whole Trekking Industry). Dunno about the park or later hospital.

Bathroom Coffee, I have nothing to do with you but after going through your comments it somehow made a sense that you only WANTED to dig his drawbacks.....!! Why dont u keep quiet for a while and read his book? Or think for a while what he has done for a country... You just want to POINT OUT his negative points.........!!

Amazing, Just like you only talked about the positive parts ? he he I have nothing against Mr Sakya. But amidst all the things I do comend him for the hospitals(I even went to one of the fund raisers waaay back). But other than that his parks and visit Nepal stuff ..he he It benefits Nepal right along the alley of his business(which is All aspects of Tourism Industry and he owns a peice of them all). There sure are a lotta people who are doing the same for Nepal but does not have the resources of writing books or pulling press to praise them. Just because the press say so does not mean its all that. Thats all.

Loote, really? Im not sure if he has acted in some movies/Telefilms. Im curious to see. Well, as Rahul bro has already mentioned every coin has two sides but for me I consider him as one of the greatest minds of Nepal. Everyone has drawbacks lest this dialogue in Bollywod would not have been that popoular CHAND ME BHI DAG HAI.... But what matters is his posetive thinking and VISION that has been materialised. For me he is a great man still I admit that greatness differs from person to person. Loote bro, its a different book, though its main objective is to MOTIVATE n INSPIRE, the writer had proved with his actions too. I distinguished it from few world famous books which I ve gone throug, for instance Robert H. Schuller's TOUGH TIME NEVER LASTS BUT TOUGH PEOPLE DO, Shiva Khera's YOU CAN WIN (written in same pattern like SOCH) and few other books of DALE CAREGIE. well, go throug it if u ve time but of course, in many places he had boasted himself but Im only talkin abt his posetive sides.

I read the book with enthusiasm. The language is vey simple and colloquial and happy to know the life of a successful business man. One thing I wanted to mention is, he did things that are commendable when the events turned out to be against him. When he had a suspicion of prostate cancer- he began to plan so many things but did not pursue when there was none. I wished he had prostate cancer for he would have done something more !

Nepal needs people who likes to work little than talk big. Karna Shakya has done something (mentioned above too), which has benefited our country, so, I applaud his contribution. I don't know much about his bad past records but following allegations and clarification appeared in mysansardotcom, I did found him honest compared to average business people and much better than political leaders. Agreeing with Sirish, I also thought why he did not try to do more when he was physically strong, was having better hold with governing people and business circle. He could definitely have done much more in early 90s than now.

I do not think you need to donate millions of dollars, invent something new, or save thousands of lives to become a hero. I think you can be a hero if you can effect lives of hundreds of people in small ways in the context of Nepal. Right now, in Nepal with daily strikes, bandhas, conflicts, and all the greedy leaders from Maoists, political parties, to royalists leading Nepal, we have a very few heros I can think of I can look upto. And Nepali media has done a terrible job giving all the headlines to the politicians and giving almost no space to small time heros who keep on working on the background to make a difference to hundreds of people with no media attention. This is one of the reasons why we know so little about work of likes of Karna Shakya. When I was in grade 4, I remember Karna Shakya coming to my high school to organize a walkathon to raise money or the cancer hospital. It is a small thing. However, I cannot remember anyone else in Nepal working with young people and organizing events in small ways, and doing charity. The hospital may be in memory of his loved one but it has benefitted thousands of people. Similarly Visit Nepal was beneficial to his business. However, because of his effort and leadership, so many other small hotels, and toursim entreprenuers benefitted. It was his idea and we should give him credit. How many other mega Nepali businessmen have lead such a huge campaign which benefitted the entire industry and the country and not just his/her own business? It is easy to criticize but how many business leaders like Karna Shakya have we seen? Bhaktapur Hospital and Visit Nepal are noteworthy things but they are not the reason why I have started to look up to Karna Shakya. A few months ago, I saw an article on Karna Shakya's positive thinking and his book on Mysansar.com. I was really impressed because he was talking about changing Nepal through hard work, dilligence, investment and he was very positive. Things he talk about are nothing new. However, he is one of the only few people I know who is trying to bring positive thinking in Nepal in small ways when there are so many negativity about Nepal in media. It is not only me, if you look at comments from readers in Mysansar.com, there are so many people who have been positively influenced by his thoughts. I consider him a hero because he has motivated me and given me that there is still hope about Nepal after reading his articles on his battle with cancer, and his positive thinking. In the western world, we give so much credit for celebrities for coming to media with their struggles with Cancer. However, we are too stingy to do the same for Nepalese. Only other heros I can think of besides Karna Shakya in the current Nepal would be Mahabir Pun and Dr. Ruit. Pun returned from the US to his village in Myagdi, building a school, brining wireless, building income generating ventures quietly without asking for much attention. Dr. Ruit built the famous eye hospital with his hard work and benfitted so many people. However, we seldom hear about these heros in our media except when they receive some awards or release a book and not many people hear about them.

Karna Shakya's contribution in tourism and social service is commendable. He is not as tainted as most of the other Nepalese businessmen, but 'Karna Shakya, the great' is quite an undeserving eulogy for an ordinary conservationist cum hotelier. As a businessmen, he owns his fair share in exploiting situations to make personal gains. Afterall, he is one of the businessmen in Nepal who can't survive without adjusting to different political circumstances. Even a Malpot ko Peon exploits his position, why wouldn't Karna Shakya? He may be better than THE Golchhas or Chaudharys or Khetans or Jyotis or others, but no he is not THE GREAT. And his riches doesn't match the bigger guys, so may be he has a bigger heart than them. Its a different matter if he is considered great because he made his book available for free. He sold what he could sell. Now this free book will sell him more than anything else. So he gets his faire share, again.

More and more, the commercial success of Karna Shakya's book "Soch" has shown how big a hunger there is in Nepal at this time for -- well -- simply written "self-help/self-enlightenment" books in Nepali bhasa. I suppose, human beings everywhere want to learn from others to improve themselves in some ways. And we know that "self-help" -- the form of books, seminars, etc -- is a multi-billion dollar industry in the US. In India, there are now a dozen Indian self-help gurus. Perhaps Shakya's succes opens the door for Nepali Steven Covey, Tony Robbins et al to emerge in coming months and years to tell Nepalis: "Yes, you can shape your own destiny if you folow this 10-step process in this new Nepal." oohi ashu
