FNJ prez denied US visa POST REPORT KATHMANDU, April 10 - The US Consulate in Kathmandu has denied a US visa to Bishnu Nisthuri, president of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ). Nisthuri was planning to attend a gathering of journalists in Washington DC on April 21. Nisthuri sat for an interview for the visa on Tuesday. The Consulate asked Nisthuri about Nepal's current political scenario, Terai movement and his purpose of the visit to the US, and ultimately denied him visa, a source close to Nisthuri informed the Post. When contacted, Nisthuri did not want to speak in detail but said he was surprised why he was denied a visa to attend a talk program on the state of Nepal's media. Nisthuri, who played a crucial role as a civil society leader in making last year's Janaandolan a success, was invited by journalists living in North America. Professor Abhi Subedi was also denied visa last year. http://www.kantipuronline.com/kolnews.php?&nid=106245

rahulvai ,I understand your concern.he deserves VISA,I have not doubt about that, and perhaps he will be called to take VISA.I believe, you know Krishna Kadel,Gautam Dahal and so many other journalist who are organizing this event were popular figure.I am not sure but Krishna Kadel once became president of Amnesty International or any other Human Right organization.he is very good orator,i respect him and he has every right to chose where he wants to live. But again,I don't think,Sole responsible for this day is US Consular.

But to be serious, a visa is granted at the discretion of the counselor officer and no one is entitled to it. It is just too bad when anyone is denied a visa, let alone someone who has contributed to the political process in Nepal and who has a thing or two to say about the situation in the country to others in the world.

I have few questions: Is the organization that has invited FNJ President a legal entity? Probably US govt. looks for some financial benefit from his visit. What and How much benefit US Govt will get from his visit since he is not a tourist ? h1b, How could you assume that Nisthuri was invited by NAJA ? The reporting does not mention who invited him.... Another example of poor and incomplete reporting.

rahul vai The US govt. gives social security number to the artists as soon as they apply and the well informed nepalese artists apply as soon as they land in US. mero hypothesis matrai hai feri: Uncle Sam grants them SSN because they pay taxes on their earning. One reason of denial of visa is Uncle Sam not getting any or very little financial benefit from him. h1b, I honestly did not know they were having gathering on 21st. The report does not mention who invited him.

VISA moriarty le dine hoina jasto lagcha malai ta. VISA is handled solely by the person who sits there in the counter to gauge the applicant. They have more than 15 that kinda person and they take the decision within 5 minutes. That's what I understood. And, so it's upto them to take the decision within 5 min. after glimpsing applicant's document and short QA. But, once the issue raises, the HIGH level person like Moriarty can take the issue and help to reconsider

Anyone can be denied or granted visa. The US embassy has clearly stated that before someone applies for it. So why should we be complaining on US's foreign visa policy. Whoever got were lucky one , the one who don't should consider themselves as unlucky ones. this is the bottom line. And nobody is clapping in this forum that he didnt got the visa. and BTW Rahulvai is y so critical about others in this forum. I think he thinks he is the perfect one but the fact of the matter is he is the one who be criticising others. not only in this thread but i have noticed him backbiting others in many other threads which compelled me to write about him. If he is so concerned about Nisthuri's visa denial why don't he file a complain in US embassy rather than complaining about our Nepali brother's thoughts in this thread.

Very Good. By the way should not maosists be actually be heading for China, N. Korea, Cuba, Vietnam???? I guess he made a mistake, since he just stepped out of the jungles with blood of 14000+ innocent victims sticking to his pen, note-books etc. USA we trust you. Especially Mr. Moriarty, sir, thanks for being tough, we need people like you in our Govt.

kalki kapil and abodh They deserve a second chance. Probably they have not done this before. Its not about just visa denial of Mr. Nisthuri as an individual but sad to see the rejection for FNJ President. I also suspect lack or adequate supporting paperwork/documentss on the inviting org part. And Uncle Sam saw no financial benefit from his visit (my assumption). Yes, there are deficiencies in nepalipost websites and inconsistencies in the news posted but his efforts are commendables for taking the risks than those who do not do anything.

National Nepalese journalists leave for US [ 2007-4-19 ] By A Staff Reporter KATHMANDU, April 18: A group of 12 Nepalese journalists working with various media outlets left for US Wednesday to participate in a month long Citizen Exchange Programme funded by the US Department of State. The programme entitled "Media Coverage of Government Accountability and Transparency in Nepal' will begin in Washington DC where the journalists will participate in a number of interactive seminars on different media related issues. The Nepal Press Institute (NPI) played an instrumental role to hold pre-visit seminars aimed at assessing the areas of interest on media related issues to prepare the 12 journalists. Delphi International, A Program of World Learning in the US has been coordinating with different media institutions in the US to prepare the seminar topics. The attraction of the programme is that the journalists will get the opportunity to work with media outlets in different parts of US. Speaking at a programme organised at the American Centre, Robert L. Hugins, Public Affairs Officer at the American Embassy hoped that the programme would enable the Nepalese journalists to familiarise themselves with the working pattern of the US press. He said that the journalists could also get further insights into the overall gamut of American culture and press in the course of the month long visit. Sharon Hudson-Dean, Deputy Director at the American Centre said that the programme was first of its kind as a large number of journalists from Nepal were visiting the US to gain first hand experience of the working of the US press. The programme looks forward to organising a similar programme for US journalists who will be visiting Nepal coming September.
