I have a couple of questions regarding real world Oracle Development on UNIX servers. You can think I am a novice in Oracle. Just trying to learn a few things, as I am getting mixed up in some tools and OS they use. 1. If you use oracle FORMS, can they be developed in Windows environment using ODS and transfer (.fmb or .fmx) it to Unix server and run it on the client side? How do you develop forms in real world? 2. I guess you don't use windows based SQL*Plus if you're on Unix system. It should have its own emulating software where you can type PL/SQL. How do you develop PL/SQL? I also hear about this TOAD. is TOAD widely used for developing PLSQL? Thanks for your kind answers... I need to ask more once u reply.

I dont have much idea about oracle forms but as per your second question SQL PLUS is SQLPLUS even if you use it windows or UNIX in unix you have something like ssh and telnet and in your windows you have your sqlplus if you have downloaded oracle or you can use c:/.. You can use toad as well it is a very good tool Peace

Hope this helps: 1) You can build your forms in windows or in Unix platform -- I mean the .fmb file. But if you will be deploying in the different platform, then you will have to copy all the libs and all. So it is advisable you build it in the same platform. In Unix you can use f60gen utility to create the .fmx. 2) You can create the pl/sql in vi editor and run it from sqlplus in unix. Alternately, you can use sqlnavigator or toad to build it in windows and even create the objects. Let me know if you need more help.

basnyat ji thank you. gbs84, you gave me the precise answer i was looking for. Unfortunately i have to pose you more questions. I have only developed some forms using windows based Oracle9i DS. Now, what's the difference between Oracle9i DS forms builder and f60gen form builder? Do you have all those layout design view, graphics... menus.. canvas and everything in f60gen? or it's totally different in f60gen? About the second one, i have only used windows based sql*plus. I guess no one use that in real world. TOAD is only for creating plsql commands, or objects or it has feature of forms builder as well? I hope i am not asking you too many questions.

Batuwa. 1. Answer to your first question is yes,it can be done and the pl/sql code has to be recompiled for UNIX,LINUX .Only then the OS kernel of UNIX or Linux recognises it. 2. SQL plus is nothing but a front end application for accessing your data from the database. So no matter what your O/S is, it works fine. And PL/SQL code development is done from Oracle's Developer's Suite. Go to www.OTN.oracle.com and register a free account then start learning. One more suggestion to you is that : You will need 100 years to learn Oracle if you want Sajha.com to teach you. So better use your time somewhere else.

bme, thanks for your answer. I am just trying to sense how you guys work in real Oracle development and how you use tools that is confusing me little bit. About that, otn.oracle.com.. have already done that... I don't have any problem in technical aspects programming part as i have many years of experience on that.. it just the TOOLS i am trying to learn. Ooh ! one correction: You will need only 10 DAYS to learn Oracle if you want Sajha.com to teach you. You don't know the ability of some SAJHA visitors... dude:)

"I don't have any problem in technical aspects programming part as i have many years of experience on that.. it just the TOOLS i am trying to learn" So you dont know SQL plus is platform independent and codes written in Windows platform needs to be recompiled if used in Unix servers? Coming to Sajha with such questions doesnt help you in your quest, you need to go to otn and other websites or to class.

BME WROTE>>you dont know SQL plus is platform independent and codes written in Windows platform needs to be recompiled if used in Unix server.. My question wasn't if SQL plus is platform independent and code should be recomplied in unix or not. my question was "How do you develop forms in real world?" if your database is on Unix (any flavor)... My question was particularly asked to Oracle on Unix users. Thanks to gbs for answering. I got the answer from gbs... f60gen is the way to go:) As I've only used Oracle DS oracle form builder, i didn't know about other tools used.. My second question was "how you write PL/SQL" I know unix users don't use that pseudo-GUI SQL*plus that runs well on windows. GBS answered you can use VI editor or you can start console version of SQL*plus by typing OS>sqlplus. In fact I know i just found out we could use my favorite unix LINE editor to write PL/SQL. >>Coming to Sajha with such questions doesnt help you in your quest, you need to go to otn and other websites or to class. you already saw how well somebody answered my question. I am attached with sajha and I still think sajha amongst one of best place to pose your question. Dude, I have long histroy with sajha, more than 7 years:) I also advise you that you ask question to your own sajhaits if you have any problems:) NO MORE tug-of-war:)
