I had promised that I was going to start my own thread regarding stock investments and the markets. So many things have happened since last time I was here and I really do not feel like sharing my knowledge. But a promise is a promise and there have been few people that have emailed me and supported me. This thread will deal with investing in the stock markets. I will not discuss individual stocks but discuss ETFs like SPY, DIA, IWM and QQQQ. The one good thing about trading ETFs compared to individual stocks is the the ETFs provide instant diversification among similar companies within the same sector. I will post more as we go along, regarding entry-price, profit-target and stop-losses. I do not think that any ETF is good or bad. It is good only if I'm making money and bad if I'm losig money. If you have not been in the market so far, please read this as an information piece only rather than my recommendations. There is risk involved and you should know how much risk to take on any position. Any suggestations, comments and criticisms are welcome as long as it is market related. If this thread gets out of hand and we start discussing off-topics, I'll stop posting. Have a happy new year!!!! May 2007 bring you and your family lots of joys and riches.

allright market is all set to rally...

just like i said earlier.. with or without the oil report we would rally...

hurray... although i think it may be because of a lot of short covering in oil companies... either way i will take the gain and took profits.

what a turn around and completely put a smile on my face.

what a beautiful day... totally unexpected rally.. after all that Freddie and Fannie earnings report yesterday and today.

i exited out of my longs...

im itching to get back in the game..but my logic tells me market is very extended right now.. just look at SPY... i think this will be it for me for now. not going to be going long or short for next week or so.

Indeed a beautiful rally Latoboy. Nice to see commodities cracking. Dollar is getting momentum and gold is diving down. I want to see S&P closing above 1293.

sb, a close over 1291 would indeed be very bullish...

wow seeing some huge moves now.. 1296 right now...

if there is correction next week i might get back in... lol...

i dont know if i can stop.. my brain says i should minimize risk and stay out at these levels.

Nice rally, but still am not impressed.  Its still too premature to call anything as for me, this rally still seems like banks/hedge funds and large institutions covering their shorts and leaving suckers called individual investors still going on the long side.  After Trichet's comment earlier this morning, a European Recession may be due now (and with it and the US' woes a Global Recession may be forthcoming)...No wonder the USD rallied like no tomorrow.

BTW, here's something that tells that the worst is not yet over...Banks and IBs across the pond (in a place called London) are feeling the wrath too.

From Bloomberg earlier this afternoon:

Bloomberg – Rumours of a serious blow-up within a London quantitative/arbitrage hedge fund are abound in London today.  According to sources close to the fund – which we cannot name for legal reasons – are reported to have said that the fund has lost ‘almost all’ of its capital amidst speculation of fraud or rogue trading.  The fund - a medium sized quantitative specialist based

I would like to thank all contributing to this threads especially Emni,Samsara bro,TT dai, bhairee(bricolage),Latoboy ,thapap(What do I know?)and others for their valuable and analytical inputs.

I am  so naive to stock investment but always had desire to jump into. While doing little research,I am enticed towards energy sector as price of crude oil correcting after hitting as high as $147 so as energy stock.

Is this a right time to buy some small cap energy stock such as ROYL and fpp?

Any suggestion and recommendation are highly appreciated.

After the lows in August 2007, and March 2008, the market rallied for about eight weeks. My expectation is that the July 15 low should hold until just after Labor Day to mid September. Price wise, a rally up to 1310-1325 was noted in my July letter. The rally off the low on Friday of 1262 suggests the S&P could reach 1350. However, none of this changes the major trend, which is down. Buy dips under 1280, with a stop at 1262.

I think we hit the temporary bottom today.....looks like a buying opportunity. As Buffett said, "Fear when others get greedy and Be Greedy when others fear".

What do u guys think out here???????

I see lots of value in the financial sector out there...bought some WM today for long term hold if they can survive the credit crunch. BAC is starting to look attractive too as they eat up the bad banks.

this is definitely time for value investors to buy for long term investment. two years from now we will be looking at the stock prices of today and kicking ourselves for not getting in and waiting too long.

LOL

thanks for the compliment optionsmygame!

unless you are a day trader, you want to stay out of the market right now but if you are a long term investor (which i would like to think i am), this is your moment to shine. there is a 25% chance market will go down some more but 75% chance of it going up...so i like my chances. come talk to me in couple year and we'll see who's the idiot.

Hey guys,

I'm thinking to invest some money to stock market but I am working in H1B Visa and I'm gonna file my tax as a non-resident this year. Can I do it? When I started to open a purchase account it ask for US citizenship. I cancelled it because I opened my bank account with my passport last year. Thanks in advance.
