Go for TOSHIBA........ Cheaper as well as better performance, if you could just wait for VISTA but it will take another 5 months to come.....if you can't wait....... at least look for built in bluetooth/802.11 wireless, core duo processor, <80GB HDD, at least 1024 MB RAM.... Dude, all are integrated in TOSHIBA Satellite 15.4" Widescreen Notebook PC (A105-S4254) for only $799.99 with printer and internet security in rebate. Go and get with circuit city.com. This is the best one because I have recently bought it after many research in the market..... hehehehe.

Sony: Over compact , nice design , good performance, freaking expensive - heating problem will burn your motherboard - good show off
IBM:best and Most expensive
Dell: better then most, good reliable , nice design these days, BEST value
HP/Compaq: like american cars
Toshiba: same as dell , compaq but more expensive
This is really a great bunch of Info.Thnk you Again,I will spend few weeks for research. and then Let's see!
..Latoboy...Thank you for info but i prefer Brand New Lap Top and Virgin Girl! Hu Hu
What ever laptop u buy dude dont buy Acer. It sucks. I m repenting buying one..... go for Dell or Toshiba. They are reasonable with price
i got a pretty good deal with HP. They put in extra configurations for a good make-up , still , i dont like it . :) human nature . i believe , MACINTOSH rules , if it could suit you for your purpose !
i have too much of windows and *nixes to do , so i am off with MAC ownership. Though , i would go for MAC if it were only for browsing and presentation stuffs. rest , your choice ! :)
haha!!! how about apple..
I have my apple laptop.. go for it.. it's nice.. ehehe!!!!!!!!!
It does not matter where you buy the laptop from as long as it meets your needs. Personally, I prefer the following specs:
Dual core processor - 64 bits if possible, but that would be way too expensive.
100 GB SATA hard-drive
2GB RAM - not sure which kind is better
Dedicated video RAM - 512MB or more
DVR +- RW
Screen size - I would go for 17 inch if this is going to be desktop replacement, but 12 inch should be fine if you are going to be carrying it around all the time.
Battery - 8 cell, and preferably not made by Sony (well, I'm sure you have heard)
All this for around $1000 would be a good buy, me thinks.
I have an HP 1540 14inch widescreen with 100gig hard drive and has great speed and I love it. Ofcourse, I don't use it for wider purposes but simple-medium applications runs great, never tried out with applications that take a lot out of CPU's. But for me, the only problem is that it heats up fast, like some of the people above have mentioned. Other than that, the laptop is great. I think the laptop should be 14inch and then it looks like a laptop and i don't like the bigger size anyways. My screen is beautiful, I love it, it looks great and so far its fine. I wouldn't give it a 8 out of 10, but hey, it looks very beautiful and unless my work starts giving me something that I really have to use a much stronger speed and faster processing, I am happy with what I have. For me, as many of my hardcore computer geek colleagues would like to disagree, looks matter. For instance, my next one will be apple no matter what, it looks so very cute with that little apple sign bitten. For that reason, I even bought an IPOD. Thats that.
For those interested, one of my buddy is selling his laptop.
I am selling my 4 month old Dell Notebook Inspiron E1505 Dou Core for U$700 only . The actual cost for this unit is U$889.
For those who are interested, please feel free to get in touch with me to discuss with the payment terms.

If you can wait then wait for a couple of months months, then buy the Intel Santa Rosa Platform. This will be the best laptop system we have ever seen. If not, then you can buy a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo as I can see these come cheap these days as well.
I recommend Alenware Sentia 3450 around $1000 b4 rebates. Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor
with rebates it will be around your price range
