Meaning behind the name Nepal Hindu historians have written a fictitious story about a sage named Nemuni and have derived the name of Nepal from him, and on the way to Pokhara, there is a cave near Damauli. They (Hindus) spread the rumor that it was the cave of a sage named Vyas, the author of Vedas, Narharinath, one of those so called-Hindu historians of Nepal has that licensed to misguide out people. The word Nepal was actually derived from a Tibetan word nebal. It has ben noted in Tibetan and Chinese historical statements that the Tibetan rulers of 7th and 8th centuries were very powerful and had brought Nebal, Shensi, Urumtsi and Kuncha under their domination. Kathmandu's ancient name was Nebal. In 8th century, Jayapide, a King of Kashmir, invaded Nebal and became a captive of the local ruler Armudi. Armudi was a Tibetan name. Suniti Kumar Chatterji, the Chairman of the Asiatic Society and a professor at the Calcutta University in India, has verified this historical fact. In the Tibetan language Nepal means "a house of wool" (27-28).

i have heard other wise. The bahuns and chettris were originally from Italy. there is a place called Naples in italy. These sharp featured and darker Italians were not liked by other fairer italians so they decided to move to east. they crossed all the way through mountainic terrain and settled in higher lands of present day Nepal. later on they moved to the plains and started calling their new home country as Naples because they were from that place in Italy. As time flew by Naples became Nepal.. and this is how the story ends Ciao

Birbhadra is almost right, but not exactly. Actually, those people were from "Ne-phal", the present day's Brasil. In that time's Brasilian language (prior to Spanards occupied Brasil), Ne-phal meant "Naive"--buddhi nabhayeko, aru le je bhanyo tehi garne, arkale bhaneko pattaihalne, alchhi, etc. Ani, don't believe in those Indians, they say anything they like. don't believe me either because i am lying in a way Birbhadra did. he he....

Does it matter where Nepal's name came from? It's like askin why did the chicken cross the road? I guess if you think that tibet is where the word came from then, well....you're free to live in Tibet. get up there. Otherwise shut up and cut your crap. Every time someone starts a thread based on discrimination by blood boils!!! If i were admin id send this ass so many viruses, generations in his family would fear from using a computer!!!

discriminative thread? i don't think so, timetraveller. Just because kaka said that word came from tibet doesn't mean that whoever believes it has to live in tibet. that's ridiculous. to your question "does it matter where nepal's name came from?" my answer is yes, it is important. I'd like to know where the name of my country, which i love very much, came from. I'd like to know my ancestry, and where my ancestors were from. This is history man, and it is interesting and it also makes us who we are today. it gives us an identity. any more theories on the name "Nepal"?

Despite his other rather asinine of a thread (you know, the one about how to invade parts of WB), I would not be so quick to jump on lambasting this theory of his. Other than what our government approved in our text books, there is very little we know about Nepal. The intelligentsia has been stunted and repressed throughout our history and any opposing or diverse viewpoints/theories/findings that did not fall on official lines have been done away with. Therefore, I would skeptically be open to the statements such as what kakababa alluded to. Other than that, c'mon guys, are you not being tad racist by calling him mongolbaba and telling him to move to Tibet just because he said something that slightly disagrees with your traditionally accepted hypotheses (that too - the one about Ne Muni - is just that, isn't it, a hypotheses)?
